Almost Ready for College

There are a few things she needs to coordinate with her roommate and a couple books to order on-line or wait for until they come into the book store, but for the most part our youngest is fully in the mind set to start college in five weeks. I'm feeling pretty good about it after our visit. She was able to see specifically her dorm room and walked her classes. We made a decision to lower her meal plan from the unlimited to a set number in the semester. while the difference is only $195, when we started thinking about how she eats, that on occasion she's going to want to go for the pizza or burgers off campus, it seemed like it would be wasted money. She made the choice, the reality that every dollar does matter is sinking in. She walked her class schedule, pretty much all classes in four buildings, two of which are connected and one is just across a court yard in the beautiful building she is pictured standing in front of above.

She brought me to the science building, which I'm not sure why I didn't really see before. While she won't have many classes there, it is a building filled with lots of light, study bays, and comfy study lounges. An older friend who attends this school said it is her preferred winter study place on Saturdays. We participated in a short session at the Career Center, which seemed to resonate with DD2. helping her understand all the resources she definitely needs to make use of over the next four years, and not just before graduation. It was a good visit for her.

We explored the area a bit. The large downtown area is filled with record and other vintage shops, ice cream and coffee shops, and easily connects to bike trails along a river. She is hoping to get off campus now and again and there seemed like a lot of quaint shops to browse or window shop. We found two parks with Frisbee golf, though she's never played but thought it might be fun to start. For late on a Sunday, both on campus and down town, there was quite a few people, many families out and about, though we think most were playing the new Harry Potter-Pokemon Go game on their phones.

I'm back to work in an hour. I took care of a couple pesky things Friday by logging on for an hour or so. I got a couple texts yesterday that finance still does not have the right codes for one of my projects in the payroll system so there were errors. I'll have to fix first thing. I've a couple other assignments to take care of and my team meeting. Everyone should be moved full now, but we still have file cabinets that need relocating. It feels like I've both had time away from the office, and like I was just there. I hate when work creeps into days off, but so often is unavoidable. Sunday and yesterday were lovely weather wise and today looks the same. I'm going to need to slip outside for some minutes today. I hope your Tuesday and rest of week are filled with sun.

  1. That's great that your daughter got a college preview to get a sense of what life will look and feel like once she's there. We are on pins and needles here waiting to find out if our daughter will hear back from two job prospects this week.

  2. My poor Sissie always has work no matter how often she tries to get away. Her office calls her or she is on line every morning. I don't think she has had a vacation in 20 years. But when you own 1/2 the company you don't get to get away.

    1. It is about trade offs. My sister has just a share, and not 1/2, but she has such unreliable staff, even when she is off she is on, at least during golf season.

  3. I am glad you had a good day with your daughter at her soon to be school. It is an exciting time for her and this visit and seeing her room made it an actuality rather than a concept.
Now just enjoy the next 5 weeks!

    1. She walked her schedule, and that alone made it feel a bit real. I felt like it was a good fit and that she will thrive.
