Armed With a List and This and That

DD2 and I are going shopping today. I don't know if we'll buy her computer, but we'll at least do a good research of what options are and what she thinks will both suit her needs and our budget. This is her graduation gift from us. On Facebook, I'm getting everyone telling me a Mac book Air is the way to go. DD1, whose opinion I trust and is savvy in both  Macs and Windows, thinks a windows PC, for hat DD2 needs is more appropriate. Two teacher friends, one who has taught elementary through middle school and the other who teaches at a college level also were recommending windows. We have a list of basics she needs to check off and then she'll start the process of purging and packing.

I want us to both accomplish what needs to be accomplished, but also have a relaxed day. We'll leave after lunch, trying to avoid the extra costs of coffee and meals out. I can't say a little treat might won't be fit in though. We need to swing by a guitar store as she needs new strings and no one knows how to replace. We should have done this when her brother was here in June. We ordered new violin strings, the same as she has used for a couple years. They are not the best quality, but she is fine with the sound, and they don't break any sooner than the strings that cost  three or four times more. I did notice that when we both them last, they were three packs for $7, and now they are  three packs for $10, 18 months later, a 43% increase. Maybe I got them on sale the last time, but it jumped out as me.

She and her roommate still have a few decisions to make like who will bring a big rug for the cold tile floor and if they want a microwave. They also have to finalize the lofting decision-neither, both, or just one. I think I mentioned that they met for lunch last week and got along well and have since talked the way teens do via snap chat and text. Her best friend has been on a family vacation for the past two weeks. yesterday she went right form an eye doctor appointment to her friends house for the rest of the afternoon. I suppose it will start hitting them all that how different life will be in a month. She's been spending as much time as she can with her friends, sadly I feel sometimes at the time expenses of us. Whiny mom  moment, but last night she, DD1, and I went to the community theater production of Beauty and the Beast together. I love getting whatever time I can with my kids, so try not to be a nag. DH of course not that he would have wanted to go anyway. went into work late on his day off-again.

I haven't even had coffee yet this morning. I didn't sleep well-my own fault as I had a Diet Coke late. Pup sure was having a good snooze. I couldn't help taking this picture, wondering what he might be dreaming about.

Laundry is in and I have some tidying to do before we leave, so I best get on with it. We have loose plans this weekend, and I lie that. I any or may not go with DH to the lake on Sunday but we are meeting friends tomorrow night. My sister had knew surgery so I want to get over to visit and bring her a few meals for her fridge or freezer and a low key weekend at home just taking care of life sounds pretty good to me. Pleas share your thoughts on computers, the need for microwaves, or anything else from my this or that post you want to comment on. Have a good Friday.

  1. Hmmm, microwave...I gather she is on the meal plan. (In my day it was 20/week of all you can eat.) If her dining hall is as great as ours was, she won't be underfed by any stretch. So, I would say, it would depend on the dorm configuration. Most dorms at smaller schools have a situation where there is at least one common lounge room and one common kitchen on the first floor, equipped with a refrigerator, stove and microwave, which is rarely used. (Dorm living = meal plan requirement). If she's the type of kid who enjoys the social aspect of meal times, I wouldn't bother with a microwave. It's not like she'll be bringing back leftovers to warm up. On the other hand, August-September is when stores like Lowe's and Home Depot try to clear the floors for Black Friday merchandise. If, in my travels, I found a great unit at a great price, I would pick it up, figuring if not this year, she may need it for her first post college pad!
F.Y.I. I didn't install a microwave in this place. I found it let me be too cavalier about food preparation. We haven't missed it yet.

  2. Having sons instead of daughters, I might be looking at this wrong, but the microwave was essential to their college survivals. Popcorn was a late night staple for all three of them. It was also very easy for them to run to the store and snag an occasional frozen meal or a cup of ramen. Since you can find them (especially the small dorm size ones) inexpensively I think it is brilliant dorm equipment.

  3. We've always had Window computers and specifically HP. However, I have used the Macs at school and they are good and don't get viruses like Windows. My daughter is saving up for an Apple laptop right now. She is ready to make the switch. we pay $100 a year for anti-virus and could save that with a Mac.

  4. My oldest was an English Ed. major and we got her a MacBook Air. My youngest was an Environment Science major and got her a MacBook Pro. They served them well and were appropriate for what their majors demanded, they never had a problem and are now 6 and 5 years old and still in good shape. The Pro is quite a bit heavier, faster and pricier than the Air. But they love their laptops and regret nothing.

  5. I definitely would do the microwave. And, one other option for you to consider (work in tech, have had all possible laptop configurations) - you may want to check out a Chromebook. Price is very reasonable, and I have never found a reason to need a traditional desktop or laptop. I LOVE my Chromebook. Mine is currently provided by my employer, but if I had to buy a new laptop for myself tomorrow, that's what I would choose.

  6. After only owning Dell, I switched to HP Pavilion and love it. I spent $129 to get some sort of security and help plan. It was on sale and I got the one with lights in/under the keys, a great help.

I would definitely get a small microwave. I have 700 watts and it cooks/heats whatever I want. As a matter of fact, I have never owned a microwave with anything but 700 watts. Being girls, they are likely to get creative, and can cheaper and healthier snacks without have to go out.
