May Day Calls for Some Flowers

Happy May Day! Back when I taught preschool, we always made a fun day with welcoming in the month of flowers. My own kids got in on it as well with side walk chalk and colorful paper. Not really a tradition in my part of the country's, but I do love the idea of bringing a May Day basket filled with flowers to an unsuspecting friend or neighbor, leaving on their door step, ringing or knocking and running away. Allergies aside, I am skeptical of those that say they do not enjoy flowers. I have some favorites. Tulips make me smile, and as we had a wonderful surprise in our first little house where clusters popped up that first spring, I've kept my affinity for them ever since. I have not had success growing them, but love them none the less. I enjoy sunflowers and may take the advice of some readers that suggested putting them in. My girls bought me a beautiful bouquet of sunflowers a few years ago, waiting for me when DH and I came home form a 30th anniversary weekend.

Wildflowers also are  a joy. I've not been a rose person, other than I did have my bridesmaids carry a single white rose with greenery, but my family knows I love lily's. I'd love to have a flower gardening knack, but instead, if I can get m hand on flower seeds, I'll just put them in pots on m porch, and hope I get some results. Even better, I'll splurge a bit on  plants already started. We had a message that the high school is still going to hold the plant sale. I don't know if they were able to deliver or if the kids took the plants home, but I hear the plants are flourishing. I'm sure they will sell with safety in mind.

My daughter is going to be out for a work shoot today and will run errands. Aldi has the planter basket so she is going to get one for me and my Mother-in-law. I'm so excited to hang a little color on our shepherds hook  in front of my porch. Later, I'll get out and take a walk and look for sings of flowers-violets, lilac buds, and the first points coming through of tulips. Happy May Day everyone.

  1. I was just thinking of May Day today. Some of our neighbors have the most gorgeous roses (10-15 plants all together, all different colors) & they are stunning. On our evening walks, I always stop and try to literally, smell the roses. I finally got my 14 year old to join in, and now he loves admiring them as well.

    Happy May!

  2. You can't go wrong with lilies! Daylilies should do great where you are--buy yourself a bag of bulbs! (It's even more fun to be given the bulbs from a friend who has divided hers!)

    1. Tulips did great at our old little house. Here, it is the rabbits and squirrels that seem to dig up my bulbs. I've just never had luck with winning the game.

  3. I love tulips too but have now started planting the shorter double-headed ones. The larger ones are lovely of course but they tend to bend over and die quicker. I also planted some sunflower seeds recently plus a couple of packets of wild flower seeds. Nothing doing yet but I'm hopeful as I love wild flowers.

    1. If you have tricks to keep the little critters form eating your bulbs, I would love to hear them!

    1. They sort of say Welcome Spring! More than ever this year I seem to be appreciating anything with color.

  5. I love flowers but have severe allergies. I always bring daffodils into the house and then had to move them to a room far away. I grew a mixture of Purple Prince tulips and daffodils in the same bed and mixed. The result was spectacular.

    1. If overly fragrant, I have the same issue, but I am willing to sacrifice for the color.

  7. I love flowers! Peonies are my favourite.
I had to go do a Google search after reading this entry this morning, as for me May Day is a labour "holiday". There are usually big labour union parades celebrating it. I didn't realize there was a connection to spring.

    1. Love peonies as well. I had those at our little house and haven't been able to grow here. I inherited them form previous owner. I guess I did recall that fact about unions. I had forgotten until you said so.
