Positively Tuesday-Leaving Social Media Righteousness Aside

Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube all could be positive forces in the world. They keep us connected to loved ones far and wide, connect us to new information we might not have otherwise known about but is relevant, and gives  fun to to look forward to like travel, restaurants, and recipes It also has been full of fights and arguments and people needing to have the last word. As this is the last Positively Tuesday for July, I thought entering a new month might be a good time to pledge to myself that I will not use social media for anything but being social. I'll try hard to scroll on by the divisive click and share  meme's, from either progressive or conservative sites, and perhaps start unfollowing many or most. This is not as easy as it sounds as there are those that want to turn every post into a fight. Perhaps I was one of those without even realizing it, or with justifying it.

No, it would just be better to just ignore even when a troll from  high school who I don't even follow, jumped on a comment I made on our city  page about the new mask mandate in Minnesota. I hadn't said anything controversial, just responded with my two cents worth of thought to someone asking a theoretical question about how would the Executive Order be enforced. I had just commented that I thought it would be enforced similarly to the No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service, with businesses enforcing through courtesy requests, and only when someone goes off the rails and disturbs the peace, would it be a law enforcement issue. I've witnessed that with the No Shirt, No Shoes, so seemed an innocent analogy. Woah-apparently I was being hypocritical because I previously shared support of peaceful, note the word, protests. Even community dialogues that are neighbors talking to neighbors will turn heated. I made the mistake of replying rather than ignoring, but when she commented rudely again, I  let her have the last word-I don't care what her opinion is, so why let it ruin my day?

I'm FB friends with a few of you. Please hold me accountable if you see me falling of the wagon. In the meantime, I'll focus on  liking puppy pictures and grand children, fun events, funny jokes and a hoos Sean Bean meme. No one will miss my views, I'm sure of it.

  1. I made the mistake of a comment and was invited to not come back. I have commented worse, but this ticked of fans of our leader. It was not even a really strong comment. But, I am not up for any of this fighting on the internet.

    1. Hiding behind keyboards and not talking to people face to face has become a big US problem.

  2. I'm very tempted to give it up altogether, at least until the election is over. It's very difficult for me to stay disengaged. I don't post political things on Facebook, for professional reasons, but find myself liking things with some regularity. There is too much right now & I find it to be not a good use of my time.

Ironically, I saw an idea on Facebook over the weekend. There were 100 days left until the election, and one of my FB friends pledged to commit 100 random acts of kindness. Basically, putting positive energy out into the world, to counter what else is happening. I'm not sure I'll get to 100, but maybe I'll post about positive things I'm doing right now.

    1. Having done public policy work, much of it as an advocate, for most of m life, it is hard to turn it off. I feel like I need to know. But it is so consuming and isn't helpful lately. No one is swayed by my opinion anyway.

  3. Those local pages seem to be the worst, people are so rude. I enjoy Facebook for keeping up with birthdays, cat pictures and travel photos but the rest of it is best avoided. Blogs are a lot more civilised! x

    1. You have the right attitude. My finger have twitched to take the bait and send a scthing comment, but I did not, and did better just scrolling on by.

  4. I've stopped following a few good pages because I can't be doing with the opinionated people. I'd just rather not bother because some people can and do take offence at everything, or there is only one opinion - and that's theirs!

    1. Even what should be benign/nonpolitical pages get weird at times, don't they? There was an odd little argument that fortunately was shut down b turning off comments on the Aldi Nerd page. For heavens sake-its supposed to be a fun page!

  5. I was jumped on about a comment I made on the local news Facebook page about masks. I could tell immediately that the poster was the one feeling guilty as I just expressed my opinion. We should be like a duck and let the water just roll off our back. :)

    1. I like that-I will avoid people not wearing mask, but my daughter works in settings that she can't avoid non-maks wearers-I worry for her, and for my husband, and both bringing it home, despite our precautions.

  6. I only use blogger and Instagram, I don't use facebook or twitter at all. I've read about too many bad experiences which have put me off. X

    1. Facebook has really gone down hill as a useful communication tool beyond real friends and family due to the experience with some of the very far right and left pages. I am slowly unfollowing those that I deem divisive and not supportive and informative.

  7. I have cut back my social media a lot, mainly twitter. I use FB only for groups, not friends so its not too bad for me, but yes, there is lots of tension and reactivity online.

    1. Twitter frustrates me-always has. I never got the point of every thought being broadcast in 140 characters (or whatever the ocunt is.) Yet, I do use to promote my blog, and get sucked into nonsense.

  8. I no longer comment on Facebook after being jumped on. Instead I just go through my home thread every morning and delete all that conspiracy or negativity. Makes life so much easier.

    God bless.

    1. Little by little I am getting those pages off my feed. I already feel lighter in just the last few days.
