Positively Tuesday-Still Summer Edition

Labor Day is late this year-the last date it can be as the first Monday in September, stretching out the "last" of the summer weekends. Still, based on the astronomical calendar, summer doesn't end until September 22. This has been an odd summer, and it will transition into an odd fall. It already has for those with kids returning to school, regardless of what type of school. Regardless of how odd things are, there still promises to be some wonderful weather days, some miserably hot weather days, and tastes of fall thrown in for good measure. I've got a short list of what I still want to do, continue to do,  to enjoy summer.

Swim in the Lake:  I'll need to navigate a little muck to get far enough in the lake to swim  if the guys decide to bring n the dock this weekend, but I'd like to fit in perhaps two more swims. My older daughter left her paddle board in the boat house so maybe she might like to come along and get it out a couple more times.

Make a big batch of roasted vegetables: Before the corn, tomatoes, onions, and other summer fresh produce is gone I want to buy them all and do a big roasted vegetable dinner. I'll look forward to the fall and winter squashes but before it ends, I want the fresh taste of summer some more.

Make a batch of jam with summer fruits: I have odds  and ends frozen in the freezer. Whatever else I can get my hands on, I'll experiment with a mixed fruit variety.

Wear sandals and flip flops: My odd tan lines, which are probably only noticeable to me since I barley tan, are an homage to being able to just slip on flip flops to get the mail or take out the garbage. For walking the dog, I try and at least put on a more stable sandal with a good bottom. Soon enough my feet will not want to be exposed to the cold, so until then, my piggies are appreciating the freedom.

Read under a tree: Our big red maple tree in the back yard provides a lush shade filled spot to bring a magazine, book, or even my lap top (even if the internet gets spotty) to read periodicals. I even thought I should pack up some reading materials, and maybe try and  McGyver a way to get a folding camp chair attached to Penny and bike to a different park. Wouldn't that be an adventure for me! This is a wild idea. at least  for me, but if I pulled it off, wouldn't you all be surprised.

Have cocktails on the deck or porch: Not only a summer activity, but logging off and grabbing a cold one and heading outside when I can still catch a few hours of daylight is wonderful. Each day is shorter than the one before.

Of course some of these are not strictly for summer, but are more doable before the cold winds of fall come. It would be equally prudent to take advantage of a perfect fall day. What are you still doing that is normally thought of as a summer activity? What have I left out of my list that I should add?

  1. I was shocked Saturday that it was dark at 8 pm when the summer was light until after. I wore shoes two days last winter, wearing sandals the rest of the time. The South is nice that way. I love the idea of strapping on a chair to take to the park. No, I will not be surprised at all when you do that.

    1. I'll have to figure out balancing and peddling to strap that chair. I might start with just a blanket.

  2. Love this! I have: go for an evening run with Sam, get in the pool (hopefully this weekend - we've had contractors outside at our house every weekend since summer started, so little pool time), cocktails with M outside, socially distanced outside wine with a friend, & a family tennis game after dinner before it gets too dark

    1. Losing the day light cuts into the good weather but you have a great list as well. My daughter and I are going to play tennis tonight and tomorrow she starts a volleyball league-outside and they are limiting the numbers on the court to be more distanced. They are also a just have a drink at the park crowd, so no bars where I think the spreading is happening..

  3. I'll be sticking to shorts/T-shirts and flipflops for as long as possible. I have enjoyed getting a little bit of colour just by virtue of being outside so I'll miss that later. And of course having all the doors and windows wide open all the time. I open everything up first thing in the morning and close them up at night. I love having fresh air inside the house - and of course drying my washing on my balcony. The smell of air-dried washing is just heavenly!

  4. Nice list of summer wrap-ups!
I am hoping to be able to swim until October, possibly later if the weather stays warm and the falling leaves are manageable , but who knows?

    1. Swimming with fall candle scents sound great. How cold does it get after October? I imagine the leaves are a major pain in the pool.

    1. Yesterday was an incredible gift of a day. I got out on my bike for my lunch break, then just ate wile off camera and mc for a meeting. No doubt I'll wear sandals longer, since I don't go out much other than to the store as needed.
