Monday Spruce Up-Leaving Places Better Than ...

My own bed! Yes, we sleep in the same bed every night we are at the lake, a remarkable gift with the new cabin compared to the old where sleeping accommodations were luck of the draw and arrival. Still, I do appreciate my own bed at my own house.

I slept very soundly last night. It might be because I was physically very tired from dealing with the aftermath of all the stuff being pulled out from under my kitchen sink for yet another water pipe leak. Did I mention that? Right before we were leaving last Sunday to see our daughter, DH heard a whooshing sound under the kitchen sink. He turned the water off, and on Monday morning, scheduled to meet the same plumber from the crawl space leak on Wednesday. He had to drive in form the cabin, met him, and another $504 later, we have said leak fixed. We also got a ne faucet installed, but no ne cost a DH already had as he was going to replace when we got the new floors and appliances back in May of last year. Everything from under the sink had to come out of course, and DH left it there so he could come back up. There was also a rotting board that he’ll need to deal with. For now, I just put all in a box and set aside for after his repair to the under sink cupboard board.

Leaking pipes aside, it was good to get home. I usually appreciate home, Worts and all, when I get back from being away. More so when I travel for business, because then I’m not even with my family, but even on vacations. Even this vacation, when essentially, it is another home, coming home to the chaos we left behind was good. It was our chaos. Whenever I stay somewhere, I leave it better than how I found it. In this case, I totally cleaned all the nooks and shelves, and bins of the refrigerator, even though we pretty much only used a cooler all summer as we tried to stay socially distanced when not outside. The spills and crumbs, and  slight disorder was left by my BIL’s family and mom. Yet, we did use last week, so I wanted it to look as if no one had used it. We also washed every towel, every machine washable rug, swept and mopped, and febreezed and vacuumed the place before we left as well. I washed the sliding door windows with Windex, knowing pup likely added to the smudges.  The place looked ad smelled good. Now, by the end of next weekend, I hope my home has that sort of attention.

  1. So sorry about the pipe leak, but better you found it before you were gone for a few days?

I'm with you, I like to deep clean our vacation house, whenever I'm there for longer than a weekend. It doesn't get enough love, so I try to give it a big clean out in December & June.

    1. You are right that it was better that we found before we left and that my husband could get it set up to be fixed. Because of the mess on the floor, after I boxed up the cleaning supplies, and took the rug out for a good shake, I decided to try and see if it would be washable and it worked well, plus I got the floor cleaned on hands and knees.

  2. Yep I love sleeping in my own bed too. Vacations are great, but so is coming home. I believe in leaving a place cleaner than I found it too. Funnily enough, my sister and her family rented a place in Croatia in August and on the day they were leaving she stripped the beds and had everything washed and on the line before they left. She said the owners couldn't believe it - that someone had taken such good care of their rental. But that's really as it should be isn't it!

    1. We had a similar response in France when the young women who was to collect the key and do the cleaning (we had a choice of paying her or doing ourselves). Well, I wanted to make sure our hosts standards were done, so I paid the cleaning fee, though we cleaned up all our mess. The young girls response was, along the lines of, "you didn't need the cleaning?" Our host said in a review we were an immaculate family to host-never terms to describe our family!

    1. Looking at positives as others have pointed out, at least caught before we left. It was odd "going" to work yesterday though. I sort of over did my easing back to work.

  5. There is nothing more distressing than an under-sink leak! At least, it got taken care of sooner than later. I do hate wading into the house after being gone.

    1. So true! We'll need to replace the floor board-obviously there have been other leaks in the 20 years we lived here, so the board is quite gross.

    1. I am sure this was one of many leaks judging by how bad the floor was, but this might have been going on longer-but caught before a pipe burst and was just a leak. You have a revolving door of extras-no need to add my chaos, though I want to see your part of the country.

  7. No matter how wonderful a vacation is, I love coming home. I am glad the leak is fixed without too much damage. My sister had to replace the flooring in three rooms last year.

    1. Well that would be awful-so sorry for her! We had floors replaced in May 2019, and everything had come out of the cupboard then, There was some old water leak spots, but this one I think must have been slow and persistent. I'm glad just the cupboard floor that is all that needs replacing.
