Pause on W's and Just a Boring Update

I'm really out of blogging mojo-but love reading others so sneaking them in when I can. I suspect I will be hammered for another three weeks at work-then I am taking a week off. I calculated out that I will lose 58 hours of vacation, so will see if that can be donated. I will not let this happen next year-even if I have to do some creative comp days, but use vacation days. I feel a bit used up by my employer-but I hold a lot to my own doing because I logged in on days I was supposed to be off, or went ahead and accepted a meeting because after all, I was just staying  at home anyway. I think working from home though is even more of a reason to not squander days of rest and relaxation. I can't escape work physically, so need to do it mentally. Feel free to yell at me in comments over the coming year if I start in on this again!

It's a three day weekend, Monday is to honor those that gave the ultimate sacrifice in their military service. Admittedly, I do not probably honor very well other than maybe a Facebook meme, some likes for my military friend and family posts, and perhaps a prayer to keep those serving safe. Still, the day is a holiday from work. We have  coolish weather, or rather normal weather after the May heat streak. DD2 is going with friends to a cabin and DD1 and I are going to the family place later this afternoon. DH is coming up on Saturday night, but I'll be heading home as I want a full day in my house purging. Plus, it is hard ot have the dog there when there is the first weekend of summer chaos-he'll get his cabin time.  DD2 is going to help me with some projects on Monday, and DH has to work anyway. The boat has something (knew when purchased) to get installed/replaced and DH is taking it on Wednesday next week. The dock needs some repairs  so there wouldn't be a place to tie it up anyway, so we'll delay another weekend.

I'm battling a headache, but have been staffing multiple mail boxes. I am logging out by 2:00 and we will leave as soon as my daughter is ready after work. I made a small batch of cake mix cookies for DD2 to bring along with her. she's going to bring a watermelon as well. I have a pan of brownie's that baked really wonky-didn't rise at all, so not sure if I'll bring or not. I pulled out a 1/2 bag of frozen peas and a portion of the ham from Easter and made a really tasty ham, pea, and shell pasta salad. It didn't all fit in the  plastic container so that was lunch-yum! I'm just going to grab some steaks for DH and other for grilling, more fruit, and beverage son our way to the cabin and call it an easy weekend. DD2 made a mess of food as well. That's about all I have for a quick update. I hope at least by Tuesday, I feel more balanced on the home front and that is worth foregoing a day or two at the cabin.

    1. Nothing in the last year has been normal, including taking days for me. I will try and schedule days without guilt after July.

  3. Sorry to hear you'll lose that much vacation time - maybe they'll make an exception due to Covid?

  4. Your pasta/ham salad sounds delicious. Maybe I should make something similar. We're having a super mellow weekend, which I'm grateful for. It's been a very busy & stressful time for all of us, so this is just what we need!

Looking forward to some productivity, but also a lot of relaxing.

    1. It was a hit too and felt like a practically free salad. A good use of leftover ham.

Nobody is going to respect your boundaries if they can't see where they are drawn, including yourself. I would suggest shutting down the work computer, and not answering the phone when you are supposed to be off. Time is, literally, money, YOUR money they are taking.

    1. I get and agree with your point. Implementing said strategy is entirely different.

  7. Hello Sam, If you lose significant hours of vacation that are not reimbursed, you should check with your accountant whether they can be taken as a tax loss. You might be surprised, and the cash value to you of the deduction might be worth quite a bit.

    1. That's a great suggestion. I've never heard of that, but I'll ask.

  8. So glad you get to get out to the cabin/lake. You work too hard. Hubs was always giving away time to sick people as he was never really sick and he still had over $16,000 of sick leave when he retired which is paying my health care premiums. He gave the max of 2 weeks for several years and still had money to burn we could have taken 1/2 out and been heavily taxed but decided to let it pay my premiums until I am 65. Have a great weekend.

    1. We can only donate vacation. Sick time? I've stopped accruing as I'm over the max.

  10. Consider me wagging my finger at you, Sam - step away from the work when you're not on the clock! You need to separate work and your real life and draw a strong line! My out-of-office email says "I do not check email outside office hours." and everyone knows that I won't budge on that.

Sorry to hear about all your unused holiday time too! That sucks! Can your company pay you out for it? I'd highly recommend that you just TAKE IT ALL in one go. If your company can't survive without you, that is THEIR problem, and they need to hire someone to cover for you so that you can get your downtime!

I chide because I care - and I'm stepping off my "mom" soapbox now. :)

We have a similar holiday in November in Canada: Remembrance Day, Nov 11th, when we honour all of those who've served our country in the military. We all wear poppies - it's a thing here.
