Thrifty Thursday -Fingers Crossed

My daughter and I are on the road when this is scheduled to publish. I've got fingers crossed the minor issues are resolved and it's an efficient trip. Not much thrift but here's a few- one big I guess for my daughter.

  • My daughter and friend hopped around different search sites for airfare. They ended up waiting overnight and found same flights for $309 less than night before.
  • Father's Day was a frugal but delicious burger meal. DH did his own cooking if the burgers.
  • We've got water, sandwiches, pretzels, and juice to help ward off driving hunger
  • No take out or eating out for me or for family meal. Have leftovers left for the others should they want
  • My daughter was near both Sam's Club and Trader Joe's so picked up a few items without anyone going out of their way. Less driving is essential these days.
  • Cooked up a pound, maybe more, of chickpeas lurking in my pantry. I planned to make hummus, but didn't get far enough in my day. My version is just the chickpeas, garlic, lemon juice, a little tahini, and blitzed with water to the consistency we wanted. Salt and pepper to taste. No recipe but I'm sure you can Google many. I kept about 1& 1/2 cups out for my daughter (more than a can) and put the rest in two freezer bags. Both held about two cans worth. Considering even at Aldi they are 69¢ a can, this 1/1 bag was probably $1 worth, so got these down to about 20¢ per equivalent.
  • Filled up DH's vehicle last night( he wanted us to take his newer vehicle) in town with slightly less expensive gas and a coupon

It won't be a frugal few days, but I just don't want to worry once we're there. If we need to go out of walking distance we'll do a Lyft or Uber. We'll also want a nice dinner tonight and lunch before getting in the road. How was your week? Anyone saving money?

  1. In a word, expensive. And I don’t even care. Took a little vacation to Presque Isle, Lake Erie to celebrate DD turning 18 and it was gorgeous. It’s a beautiful fresh water beach, half a tank of gas away from home. Something I don’t skimp on is hotels so yeah, it was pricey. Gas of course is not cheap. We ate out a lot. But I did sign up for loyalty programs to get free appetizers, birthday girl got a free Starbucks drink and a free dozen of Krispy Kreme donuts. Hotel breakfast was top notch and I took advantage of the free lobby coffee throughout the day. We visited an environmental center that was free, beach was free but we did purchase new chairs to take with us. It’s not like they won’t ever get used again! So while we splurged, our natural frugal ways did creep into the trip. It was worth every penny! Getting the loose ends of college stuff tied up this week so we can just relax for the next few weeks instead of chasing sales and hoping for enough supplies. The tampon shortage is real! I hope you have an equally lovely trip and accomplish all that you need to do in the big city. Safe travels and have fun! JoAnn

    1. Yes, any vacation seems to add dollars but glad you're good with it. She got some nice birthday perks.

  3. I got my income tax return, so dumped that in my savings account. I also picked out my next book club selection, and although I paid full price for 4 of the books (plus 2 more on order), I supported 3 local brick and mortar bookstores with my purchases. I did restrain myself from buying more books, does that count? :)

I'll be buying lunch for my mom and I today, and depending on the time, I might stop by a thrift store for a quick browse on the way home. Other than that, I haven't spent a cent since Saturday groceries.

    1. So many people spend tax return funds like it's free money when actually it's our own income back to us. Good for you to save it. I too try and support local with extra purchases. Seems a good use when I splurge.

  4. I like hummus but I have never made it. I have a ton of chick peas and they are grown here so you can get them free. Need to try that. I love hummus

  5. I hate chickpeas, so I made my hummus from Great Northern Beans. My friend who was married to a Jordanian and gave me the recipe tried it and said she could tell no difference. So, that bean might work, too. I love hummus and finally bought tahini, so I should made some. Have a great trip.

    1. To me the chickpea has a nuttiness that white beans might not, but I can understand swapping them. I bet it's delicious too.

  6. I made hummus once; not bad. It didn't seem too much better than already made, so I guess I will stay with the latter.
