Friday Free For All- mid Summer

I think of this weekend as mid Summer. From Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend is 14 weeks, and tomorrow marks us at seven done. June felt odd. My daughter's were full of stuff on the next stage of life, friends seeing their youngest graduate, extended family had loads of life events, and then there was us, DH and I observing, helping a bit on the side. July burned in, literally, with heat and humidity. Normally I like summer, but my age must be showing. I just haven't had enough water time. I want to remedy that these remaining summer weeks.  Where else is my mind going and fingers tapping?

Luggage Needs

DD2 will not be home for Christmas. She'll be back in the US for her birthday, but back at school by the actual day, so thinking early gifts that she can use now might be good. What she needs is a large suitcase, currently only having a smallish one that just barely meets carry on luggage size. Part of me thinks she could make that work with a good packing job and a decent sized backpack. She's little and her clothes, minus a warm coat needed by December, are too. If not, a large suitcase would be a good gift.

But, have you seen the price of luggage? If I'm going to spend a small fortune I'd like to make sure it lasts. But, she probably will end up shipping things home, suitcase included. I suppose insurance would cover the case and contents if damaged. The flip side would be finding the least expensive option and assume it's a disposable item. Oh the first world problems, but recommendations appreciated.

Food Trucks

Why are they so yummy? My younger daughter has a love hate deal with them. She's worked in several restaurants, so knows good and bad practices around food. She questions how well these best practices are in a tiny truck cranking out food in record speed. Our local dairy moved to a bigger location. To mark the move, they've had a cheese curd truck outside in their lot. I'm so tempted to stop when I've driven by, but so far resisted. Melty gooey deep fried cheese from local farms? That's decadence.

DD2 went to a small "party in the park" Tuesday night, a collection of food trucks, and family friendly activities. She came back with a small margarita pizza, for a not small sum, but got both dinner and lunch from it. It smelled so good. I miss the Thursday Food truck at my office spring to early fall. I probably participated 1-2 times a month. It was a good networking lunch. There's a few trucks that pop up around town but I hear after the fact. What's your opinion? Love them or hate them?

Ok, A Needless Buy

I needed to stop for Oragel on my way home from trivia at the grocery store. Poor daughter was in agony from an inflamed  gum, but no infection, no abscess. All her dentist prescribed was over the counter pain management. I passed an end cap with some 4th of July melamine serving ware. I couldn't resist so bought two long rectangle and two square serving trays, plus two dip bowls. One set to keep and one for my daughter. I spent a whipping $3.20, including tax. I thought the long platters would be so cute for watermelon slices, and the square and bowls for veggies to go with dip. I don't really have summer holiday things. I know, I'm supposed to be decluttering. DD2 asked where hers were. I'll gladly pass mine to her when she wants them.

That wraps up my Friday Free For All. Do you have summer holiday serving items? Do you like food truck fare? Luggage suggestions for her? Join in the conversation on these or whatever else you want to talk about.

  1. GS and I went to an outlet to pick out a large suitcase for him before he spent junior HS year in Germany. It was my going away gift to him. Honestly I don’t remember the brand but it was a hard case. When I fly, I just take a weekender because I hate checking in luggage. As for food trucks, there was quite a controversy here with local restaurants complaining but now there are certain places they can park. I rarely eat out so I have no idea of the cost or taste! The dogs have been good so no complaints there. I’m having shrimp for dinner and will cook the chicken tomorrow AM. I haven’t made the chips yet but I also have a zucchini loaf recipe I want to try. Nan

    1. The zucchini loaf/ bread is in my list too when I get my fill. We got our son new luggage a few years ago. His stuff we bought him in highschool but the dust.

  2. I think investing in a good suitcase is a nice idea. It is something she will use for a very long time. It's been so long since I bought new luggage I can't offer any suggestions on what is good now.
I love the dishes you bought. So cute.
    Have a great Friday Sam!!

    1. The serving ware is kind of cute. It's cheap, but will spiff up a buffet. I appreciate your thoughts on luggage.

  3. I love food truck festivals, I think it's a great way to get lots of diff food! Good luggage is expensive but worth it, maybe end of August you might see some drops in pricing? I hope DD1's tooth pain goes away, poor heart!

    1. My daughter was better but still sore. Shes not much for medicine and taking pain relief has been hard on her stomach. There's so many good suggestions in luggage.

  4. Ah the suitcase dilemma. I got a midsize for a long trip for 2 of us thinking it was smart to have 1 not 2. Well, it weighed 55 pounds fully packed. $75 overweight fee even though we can have 2 50 pound bags, so we are "underweight by 45 pounds". Nope, doesn't work that way. (Our carryon was a computer bag each).

I recommend a 2nd carry-on size or a wheelie under-seat bag. I really like mine. She will have it for the long haul.

    1. She'll need clothes that work from September to January, plus potential books, but for her two weeks if backpacking, doesn't want so much. She might have to learn the capsule method. We are conscious of the weight limits- thanks for the reminder.

  5. We only own carryon sizes. I have a really nice (and, $$$) bag, because of my business travel. Before that, I had reasonably functional ones, but not the kind that can stand up to 10+ international trips/year. Now, my bag is fabulous & I love it. I don't think I'd recommend it for what your daughter needs. I'm not a fan of checking bags, so if possible, always recommend a carry on. If you could find it cheaply somewhere, huge fan of Tumi (preferred brand), or second choice (Swiss Army).

    1. She'll need to be very organized with need to bring and practical. The backpacking throws a wrench, but she can learn to be efficient. Her suitcase can hold a week plus, so with a decent sized backpack, could get by.

  6. Since she is going to have to pack for an extended time, I would probably get a larger suitcase. That said, if you don't think she will use it more than a couple of trips I would opt for a less expensive one.

    1. Either that or she just really needs to be a minimalist. She's backpacking to several places at the end of the semester, which is why some stuff will be shipped home. I can't really see that she'll need a large suitcase often. She'll want to travel often though.

  7. Hope your girl feels better; so sorry the dentist wasn't able to help her more.
I don't think I would have been able to resist the melty cheese...cheese is one of my favorite things. I do like a good food truck though, and I love tortas and tacos.
No advice on the luggage. My coworkers gifted me a huge suitcase when I left my last job, but really it is too big for travel. I prefer carry on/duffel bag size.
I'm sure your daughter will have a wonderful adventure. Hope all the paperwork and everything works out.
    Have a great weekend.

    1. That's my worry too. She's little and a big suitcase might just be a bit much. I am sure I'll succumb to the cheese curds eventually.

  8. Crud, nothing like having both kids down at once. Does that bring back memories mom? I actually have plastic outdoor dishes. I hate paper plates and plastic silverware. These are stored outside in a large plastic bin. It is so nice to just to pull it all out and not worry about the reusable stuff. SO I would have purchased those trays in a heart beat.

    1. Just my older daughter is having the issue, but DH us run ragged. You have everything for every season it seems. I reined myself in to just the three serving pieces each.

  9. I've always had good luck with buying luggage from Marshall's or Tj Maxx.

    1. I bought my grandkids (three granddaughters) each at a different time after price shopping at tj max/Marshals. Also the suitcase dilemma, does she just need a large suitcase just to get all her things there and back? (Two trips) probably not to be used again, then maybe look at a garage sale or thrift store. Also usually cheaper to ad as a checked bag compared to shipping anything coming back.

    2. So, she needs to get her stuff there. Then, inky some stuff stays with her while she country hops for two weeks. That's where the shipping home comes since she'll be just wanting to use a large backpack with a few changes if clothes, and essentials.

  10. So many have suitcases they'd like to get rid of. What would you think of putting a shout-out to your family, friends, and/or Facebook Marketplace? If not that, would she be okay with a thrifted suitcase? It could even be left behind if she chose.

    1. Quite frankly, if she does use a bigger one, we have the two wheel kind. They're just so unfriendly in airports and cobble streets. We haven't used in a decade as I've finally figured packing light. It might be easier to ship stuff home in a box and leave a case behind. Good suggestions.

  11. When I did my trip to Peru with the solos group I got chatting to our (very experienced) tour guide. She had just a small carry on suitcase for the whole trip, which went from scorching hot in Lima to freezing cold on Lake Titicaca, plus all the paperwork for our tour group in the side pockets. She was obviously an ace at packing! But one thing she did mention to me was that if I ever bought another suitcase on wheels, to get one where the wheels are flush with the bottom of the case, rather than "sticking out" (like in the picture), because those kinds of wheels break more easily and you can end up lugging around a case on three wheels! Point taken! Oh and I love your new dishes! Very pretty!

    1. She sounds like a smart cookie. My daughter definitely needs to figure out how to get her clothes to do double duty, perhaps triple duty.

  12. Anon has a point. My sister used to travel a lot for work, and when I cleared out her house I took around 20 suitcases to Goodwill, some in great shape, a couple never used. A few years ago the university put out a request for suitcases for international students to use, not returning, and they were overwhelmed with offers.

    1. All if you are giving great ideas, suggestions. I think I'm leaning towards her using an inexpensive piece. Suze though, still debatable.

  13. Bailey bought a new Vera Bradley suitcase last year that swivels easily. She bought it to go to Posh Fest but then that got canceled due to Covid19. They rescheduled it this year to Texas and she is refusing to go there due to the politics.

Some of the food trucks look so good, but we’ve not tried one yet. Maybe soon though.

  14. Mercifully the two food trucks at my two offices are never around when I am in that office.
