Happy Saturday! We ate halfway through my summer calendar. A thunderstorm early Friday brought the steam and it's lingering today. It was a long week, a challenging week, but I'm looking forward to the weekend. Here's my weekly recap in W's.
What’s top of my mind:
My daughter's painful mouth is concerning but she's finally able to manage the pain better but it flares up still in moments. I'm glad A mentioned Orajel Wednesday nigt as that numbed enough for her to rest. Ibuprofen though on an empty stomach, as it hurts to eat, made her sick. Pup has been under the weather too. He's not eating well and had a couple days with very bad stools, and required immediate baths. I want them both better.
It's not really top of mind, but I'm following the Brittney Griner case. I got in a agree to disagree comment section of people really hating on her. No America First there. I'm trying to avoid political rants so will leave it there.
Where I've been:
My friends daughter's grad party at a regional park last night, many short grocery and pharmacy stops, a massive shop later last night, trivia and that's about it. I've been a homebody ( local I mean) even though I had intended to work at least a day from the lake. I've been picking the handfuls of raspberries each morning so the side yard is a regular place I go.
Friday's little harvest. |
Where I’m going:
We're possibly going to some of the music festivities this weekend, but I don't want to be by the big crowds, but the other music offerings are more tent dance things with the young people. I think more likely to the lake on Sunday as it's so hot. I'll experiment with my hot spot and try a day or two to extend a weekend by working from there. Tonight my sister is hosting food and cards for birthdays. I have cards to buy and realized, I'm a graduation card short. Off to Dollar Tree this morning.
What I'm eating
I made little street tacos Thursday night and they hit the spot. I treated my daughter to Chipotle yesterday. Why she loves it so much is a mystery. It's just mediocre in my opinion. I got myself a Jimmy John's as I've really been craving a good sandwich. We are classy. I know, we're supposed to be watching our dollars, but enjoying the occasional take out food lunch break with my daughter is a simple pleasure. Splurge on occasion, belt tighten others, balance life.
Interesting, no turkey at our Jimmy John's. I looked up why and I guess some restaurants are impacted by their suppliers not having turkey due to the avian flu. Will this go into fall and Thanksgiving? Something to watch as I'm sure the price will be high. I spent a fortune at the the store. $212.53 to be exact. Granted, this included pups food, garbage bags, TP, and paper towels, and a few H&B items, but still $150 was food. I didn't even think I bought that much.I had to buy name brand on several items I normally would do store brand. I'll still need top off shops and more fresh fruit and vegetables before the month is out and I realized, I forgot laundry soap. We aren't hurting, but it's not pleasant either to see your buying power reduced.
What I’m watching:
I'm watching a few more Call the Midwife episode's. I saw a new season of Grace, starring John Simm is in Britt box. I thought the first season was very good.
What I’m reading:
The book club book is Good Girls Guide to Murder. I will power read before Monday, but its a pretty short book. The Pharasees one is for August.
What I’m listening to:
I've listened to recordings of a couple task force meetings on early childhood. Who knows where the big ideas will go. My work would change considerably, not good or bad, but my guess is changes would happen so slow, as it all comes down to money. There's a good chance I'd be retired before sweeping changes happen. Some ideas popping up are so radical to the point of being just a time waste. For example, we have waiting lists for very low income families now for child care assistance, but the big idea is to fund every family up to incomes 5X what the income eligibility is now. Are middle income families stretched with the cost of child care? Of course, but to make such a leap from having waiting lists for the very low wage earners to guaranteed help for so many more, is just so unrealistic.
What I’m planning:
DH needs to pick another Friday- Saturday combo and we'll do a long weekend at the lake before summer is over. He has two weeks and two days left. Me? I have over 300 hours in my vacation bank. I think we'll do a fall cabin vacation too. Trying to save those dollars in case we do decide to join the cruisers, but really, it's as enjoyable as going farther away. Today though, I plan to clean and do laundry.
Who needs a good slap:
The mom's are back sitting at the end of the Cul de sac again! I really don't think my saying anything will stop it, but worth a shot next time I have to navigate coming or going at the same time as another car. It's weird. Then last night coming home from the grocery store, after I swear a kid screamed the entire time I was in there ( so nerves were already frazzled), kids were literally running wild in the Cul de sac in and out of people's driveways at dusk. I had to wait to get in my own until I was sure no child would dart in front of me. No parents anywhere.
Then, DD2 is helping me haul in groceries ( lots of heavy items) and as we make another trip, one of the kids goes up to my car and shuts my trunk! I didn't lose it, but I told them all in no uncertain terms, they needed to stop running in and out of people's driveways and under no circumstances was playing with someone's car/shutting trunks or doors ok. Can you imagine if he had shut the door on his or another kids hand? I don't even know who these kids were. Might have been someone's visitors. I'm probably now the cranky old lady in the neighborhood that kids will warm each other about.
What’s making me smile:
I have smiled, but not recalling any particular moment alone that stood out. My daughter's book compulsion while annoying as books are in everywhere, is endearing. She gets such joy, like a collector finding a hidden gem. I got a kick out of her thrifting excitement and success. A text from my son suggesting we go see the movie Everything Everywhere All at Once was a nice out of the blue message late Thursday. Nice to know he's thinking of his old mom.
That's my week. It was a busy- not busy week. Life stuff busy and some different news bits that will be shared as things evolve. If you'd like to recap your week, feel free in the comments or a link to your blog post.
I hope pup and your daughter are both feeling better soon.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your Saturday!!
Both better, but not 100%. She's still getting flare ups if pain.
DeleteCan't wait to hear your opinion on "Everything Everywhere All at Once". My husband and I saw it a few months ago (our second time in a theatre in two years!) and thought it was...different? The time travel was incredible.
ReplyDeleteI'll need to find streaming as I can't see it showing anywhere near me right now. I'll let you know once I do.
DeleteHope your daughter is feeling better. Mouth pain is no fun at all.
ReplyDeleteIt's been a very quiet week at my house, for obvious reasons. On the plus side, I made a huge amount of progress on the course I'm taking, as I was trapped, restlessly, at home. One of the most interesting things I learned about this week was clean cookstoves for emerging markets. It's too long to explain properly, so a link here. https://www.globalcitizen.org/en/content/clean-cookstoves-save-lives/
It was fascinating to understand how much pollution is being generated by these open air cookstoves, and how many deaths are caused by them. There are solutions, but they come with challenges. I was reading about this as part of an entrepreneurial challenge being hosted by various groups, & I'm now super intrigued to learn more.
One of my takeaways from all of my learning/studying this week - I was not excited to take the course (it's the first step to serving on an advisory board), because I'm busy, and already have an MBA, yada yada. Turns out, my MBA was quite a long time ago, a lot has changed, and just the process of learning & hearing from so many great leaders has been really energizing. I'm so glad I've made the time.
I haven't had any real professional development in ages. I try keeping up as best I can in my field, but companion training in a host of others would be beneficial. It's good to be challenged and it's been forever since I was in a classroom.
DeleteHope you have a good time at the lake, and I hope that your daughter and your pup are doing better.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you, I don't get chipotle, not my favorite place, but I'm glad that your girl enjoyed her lunch date.
We saw "Everything everywhere..." a while back. My husband really liked it, but I thought it was odd. Not exactly what I was expecting. ;)
Hope those parents do a better job watching their kids in the neighborhood.
There's this perception that it's a cul de sac so not really a street. No people, it's still a road not a play ground. We live on a park for goodness sake.
DeleteI would have been pissed about those kids too - as you say, WHERE are the parents? Hell I even put a gate on the side of my house to stop someone else's kid from up the road going into my back garden and he was only 6 at the time. The little rug rat is 12 now and, from what I hear, just as much a "joy" as ever, sneaking into people's home and garages!!! Oh, and I hope your daughter feels better soon. That must be so distressing for her!
ReplyDeleteThe parents were at the other end in their house or maybe be yard, thinking the Cul de sac was for playing. Two older kids seemed to be watching the younger as it was one of them that pointed out the trunk being shut before we saw it. She's feeling a bit better, but it still flares up.
DeleteThere’s a rental property up the road from me and a family moved in with a toddler, who was an actual demon. Tried to hit my neighbors dog with a broom, threw everything off her porch, would scream into her doorbell camera, yelled at my husband and son, just awful. Parents nowhere to be found. Idk what changed, I think they got word that they were going to get evicted if he didn’t calm down. I rarely see him outside anymore but I was terrified he would get him by a car or climb into a vehicle and swelter to death. We’ve all had a busy week. The beach was lovely. DD was blown away by The Weeknd, her boyfriend bought a cd that ended up being autographed by Abel himself. Son came home from Outer Banks just to leave again and head to Ohio for the Luke Bryan concert. Oh to be young. I went back to work today and got groceries. We’ll have a fire and marshmallows and perhaps a beverage tonight. I’m not a fan of Chipotle but do like Moe’s much better. I hadn’t heard of a turkey shortage. Curious timing for that. JoAnn
ReplyDeleteIt was the scary running around at dusk and in and out of people's driveways. I was also in a short string being tired and having just heard d screams Ng for an hour. I know kids have meltdowns in stores, and sometimes the parent has no choice but to keep on and finish shopping. I've experienced it, so not blaming. I too would have been scared for that child's safety. I hadn't heard of turkey shortage either until I tried to order the Beach Club. Then I looked to see nothing with turkey ( sandwiches are numbered) showed. That's when I googled and learned some Jimmy John's were impacted.
DeleteI hope the daughter never stops loving books.
