Truly Thanksgiving

Thank you all for the kind words in comments and in e-mails. My surgery went OK, as the trouble makers as I have termed the growths in my uterus have been done away with. Unfortunately, the second part of the procedure wasn't possible, and it has been determined if I struggle again, the recourse will be a full hysterectomy. I know it seems like a regular procedure that thousands of women undergo each year, but, the thought is still pretty daunting to me. I would not be a candidate for lapriscopic, so would be the old fashion cut and stitch with the minimal 4-6 weeks of down time. That scares me the most! My blood levels held steady this time, so no blood transfusion. I'm not feeling totally chipper yet, so sent DH and DD2 on to his cousins without me, loaded with the green bean hot dish and Sweet potatoes, pumpkin bread, and a bottle of wine.

They'll call me when they leave and possibly if I'm feeling more up to it, I'll go with them to my sisters for dessert and perhaps a late leftover sandwich. I didn't want to be on a longer car ride, but my sister is only 8 minutes away.  I saved a couple of the sweet potatoes and just made one for myself in the microwave.  A touch of salt and pepper and a little butter, and I was quite happy with my minimalist Thanksgiving lunch. I got my appetite back, but nothing is digesting too well, so hoping this fiber and vitamin rich lunch will help perk me back up. I did not grow up on sweet potatos, one of those foods my mom didn't like I suppose, and the ones I saw at big family gatherings were the overly sweet, marshmallow topped versions. Now, I find a sweet potato perfect in its most basic form. What craziness to top a delicious vegetable with fluffs of sugar and corn starch; defies my belief system.

Speaking of my sister, she will be hosting 40 plus for the meal, plus assorted late comers like my family that come for dessert and to visit. Food is never a shortage, but she always worries, as all hostess's seem to do, if she has enough. This was her Facebook post this morning. Kindness is everywhere, and now she gets to pay it forward. Happy thanksgiving everyone.

"For anyone wondering if there are still good people in world the answer if definitely Yes! In my anxiety I wouldn't have enough turkey I ran out of the house at 5:00am to pick up another turkey breast. I ran out so fast I forgot my wallet and phone. I go to pay and no money or cards so the lady behind me paid for mine and told me to pay it forward. Even when I insisted I could run home quick and then offered to get her name and address to send her money, she said  no just pay it forward. So if anyone in town knows the lady shopping at 5:00 am (besides me) tell her thank you and I definitely will pay it forward."

  1. So glad your surgery went ok, my family has a history of women who have needed hysterectomies, both my Mom and sister and several aunts for the same reason. I, so far, have been lucky and it appears I will have to go through menopause the old fashioned way (or unlucky based on how it is going so far). You have an amazing reason to take it easy this Holiday season, just sit back and ask your family to do this and that and order gifts online. I love your sister's story :) Happy Thanksgiving!

  4. Glad you are ok SAM but sorry to hear that a hysterectomy may be necessary. Rest up and be kind to yourself.
My Grandma, mum and 'sister' all had hysterectomies - 50s, 40s and then 30s for my 'sister'( related by blood but we have no contact). I have no idea when all of this will end for me as none of them ended naturally, and I have no idea about Just when I think it's all over it comes back to bite me on the backside and at almost 52 I've had enough :(
Your sister's story really does help to restore faith in mankind.

  5. This was my third same surgery in less than 5 years and each time was hoping for the end. This was better than two years ago when I just about bled to death, not exaggerating. Hopes for both of us Scarlett. I'd just like to resume normal life.

  6. Good to hear from you. I'm glad those troublemakers have been eliminated but sorry to hear that you've got more surgery hanging over your head. On the brighter side three close friends have had hysterectomies and never looked back.
Lovely story about your sister. xxx

    1. With another year of age, hoping nature decides to run its course correctly. My sister will probably pay it forward 10X's. She already had an extra set of Thanksgiving orphans yesterday on top of the planned house full.

  7. I love your sister's pay it forward story. I am cynical and slightly sardonic by nature, but I truly believe most people are inherently good people. Stories like this just reaffirm that belief. Glad you are mending and enjoyed a lazy recuperative day.

  8. I'm glad you're home and resting up - having a microwaved sweet potato is one of my favourite treats. I often make sweet potato fries as well. I also like food in its natural form - no marshmallows for me! That was a great story about your sister. I truly believe most people are kind and thoughtful :) Rest up and feel better soon!
