Feeling Good Friday-Not Going to Lie Edition

Oh it has been a rough week. I can't lie and pretend, even on my feeling good day, that it hasn't. I'm sleep deprived, have gotten overly riled up by the behavior of others and let it impact my mental health, and I had an eating binge last night, which I know had an instant impact on my weigh in this morning. Lot's of salt-lots of water retaining, plus just bad food choices and too many calories induced in a short period of time. I really want to thank those that commented and gave me feedback on my meal choices. Helpful-even those that just were giving me encouragement to keep at it my way. I reread that post and the comments after my scale fiasco. Still, it is Feeling Good Friday, and I will persevere.

1. In spite of an additional hour of traffic after work, I made it to my great nephews grad party north of the Twin Cities. DH and DD2 didn't go as they had conflicts last night so I went straight from work. I was glad to be able to celebrate with my nieces family, a niece we've seen less of than others as my brother and her mom split when she was very young. Her husbands first wife passed away very young, leaving a small child and husband to start again. My niece adopted her son after they were married. As a young teen I went through a grumpy phase at a time when my nieces mom was going through another (wretched) divorce, and as a kid she didn't cope well, spending more time at my parents. Just five years apart in age, she and I had a rocky relationship when she was at my parents house, me finding her always under foot, and in my space, but as I matured, and I understood  what was going on, my attitude shifted dramatically. I grew close to her as she entered her turbulent teen years. She is DD1's God Mother. Building bonds isn't always about frequency and amount of time spent together, but rather shared and understood experiences.

2. I'm walking regularly again with my friend V. She logs the walking route for steps and calories burned. As I'm so tired this week, we started slow, under 2.5 miles one night and just under 2 another. I'm still doing little walks myself. I will get stronger and build more stamina; this is a start.

3. My massive amounts of water, but not too much to be unhealthy, makes a noticeable difference in how my skin looks and feels in the unseasonably hot weather we've been having. I make sure I bring a water bottle for both my route to and from work. Of course, I'm running for the bathroom as soon as my car is parked!

4. When I got home last night, DD2, no school to get up for and no late night studying, was watching The Mummy on TV. She wanted me to come watch the rest with her. I curled up on the couch with her and just let my mind go blank, not thinking about all the July 1 deadlines.

5. Last, and probably least, I saw a minimal 1 pound weigh loss from last week. This makes my 6 week weight loss at 9.6 pounds. I know my over indulgence in potato chips this week, last night included, was the biggest factor in the slow progress. I own it and can make sure this week I do something about it. Today starts a new week in my plan.

Goals for the week:

  • Continue with my power walking with V. Get to 2.5 miles consistently.
  • Buy some avocados. My diet has been without them for two weeks and I miss them, and my momentum misses them.
  • Focus on getting more and better sleep.
  • Keep away from potato chips.
  • Prep greens and veggies for improved lunches and suppers for the week.

  1. Over here we say that slow weight loss is permanent weight loss. I think you're doing brilliantly. I hope that you have a great weekend and the issues that disrupted your sleep soon resolve. Jx

    1. I am of that mind set, so will not discouraged even the weeks where the scale goes up. I want to be better aware though of when it fluctuates, so I don't play ostrich and wonder why I can't be successful.

  2. Your weight loss is great! And, some weeks are bound to be harder than others. Like you said, you own it and being away is half the battle isn't it?
I'm hoping things improve with the stress soon! =)
Your goals for the upcoming week are great! And, the walking goal is reasonable - you want to slowly up your steps so you don't hurt/strain anything!
    You got this! =)

    1. Fortunately, my sleep is due to just a lot of things going around in my head and a long to do list at work and at home, but nothing stressful in a bad way. V is a great walking buddy-she is in better shape than I am, but is very encouraging, and also checks that I don't over do it and injure myself.

  3. Potato chips are my weakness as well. Hubby's too. I try not to buy them, but once in a while....oh boy....they are just what you are craving. I hope the days ahead are better for you.

    1. And they have to be real potato chips-not processed things like Pringles. We have a brand called Old Dutch in Minnesota and it is my absolute downfall-I need to wear blinders when I see them on end caps in the store this time of year.

  4. Chips are my downfall too, not sweets. Keep plugging away.

    1. Oh like the sweets too, but I find a tiny nibble of a sweet suits the urge, but chips and the saltiness-if I start, it will be handfuls!

  5. You are doing great. I've lost pretty much nothing, but have noticed a difference in my toning, thanks to a lot of strength training. Goldfish crackers (pretzel, saltine, & smores) are my downfall. How random, right? I don't keep adult snack food on hand, so that's probably why my only real downfall are kids treats. ;)

Big hugs. What are some of your favorite ways to treat yourself? A long bath? A new book from the library? A big iced tea? Is there any way you can plan a frugal & calorie free relaxing break for yourself? Sounds like you need it after your week.

    1. When my kid were younger, I too would go for the childhood snacks as that was what was around. That's great that you are feeling the results of toning-my next hurdle and so needed.I treated myself yesterday at work by reading my e-mails outside under a tree instead of at my desk-the warmth picked me up. When I got home, after pup's walk, he and I had a nice long relaxing chill on the deck, listening to the kids playing in the park. I hear you on giving myself little treats and breaks that are not about food or money-simple things work.

    1. I'm remembering that while I am busy and work is crazy-its not a bad thing.I've got great coworkers, friends and family that help keep me balanced. I'm trying to put the stressful things in containers to be dealt with, then done away with.

  7. A 1 pound loss is still great! The scale is going down and that is great. Sometimes we have a bad week and we just have to brush ourselves off and get back on track. I hope this coming week is easier for you in terms of diet. You are doing great; keep up the good work!

    1. I'm not frustrated because I know, pretty much, why the small shift over the last two weeks (total of a .2 net loss, and am prepared to correct. I'm happy to have you, Tracybee, Anne, and Anna also on this journey to share our successes and challenges, but keep each other positive. I've got a mileston marker in my mind for next Friday and will be working hard t get there this week.

  8. Do you know where to begin? Changing your diet for the purpose of healthy eating is easier said than done. It takes time to make the sort of adjustments that stick. You will not see results overnight. But it will make you healthier, not to mention it will help you look great as you age. You may or may not know how to get started. In any case, the following tips should help you learn to eat well and improve your diet, regardless of your starting point.

    1. Thank you for commenting. I'm always interested in learning more. It is refreshing to read from someone who is very knowledgeable (and probably healthy) understanding that knowing how to be healthier and actually acting is not the same-as you said, easier said than done.
