It looks icky out there today, but not as bad as I was expecting to wake up to. It looks like we received about four inches of accumulation of thick and wet snow. No one has driven yet, so not sure what the roads are like under that snow. It was nice staying in last night. I was pretty soaked form the cold rain after taking pup for a walk, We each had a plat of Chinese food, sesame chicken, cashew chicken, friend rice, low mein noodles and an egg roll, and settled into the big couch with blankets for our movies.
At the Redbox, I got one for DH, Creed II, and at DD2's suggestion, Ready Player One. Creed II was OK, though I really get nauseated with boxing-beating people as a sport is hard for me. Anyone who has seen any of the Rocky movies will know the pattern. This one, brought back Rocky IV villain, Ivan Drago, as his son's trainer, out to take back some of the dignity he was supposedly stripped after losing to Rocky over 30 years earlier. The young Creed (Michael B. Jordan) has his coming to maturity moments, guided by both Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) and his other trainer, the son of his father's friend and trainer. There are some lovely scenes between Creed and his love interest Bianca, the gorgeous Tessa Thompson, and his adopted mom (Phylicia Rashad). I'd recommend it for a rental or streaming, but to have rushed out and spent $9 on movie, or even $6 matinee, when it came to the big screen, not really. though honestly, there are not many movies I want to see enough anymore to go to the movie theater for.
However, had I known anything about Ready Player One, I might have considered it for the big screen. DD1 suggested it as she had heard good things about it. Set in a future world where real life is so depressing, filled with poverty and over crowding, humans escape to the Oasis, a virtual reality world in which they can be anyone, and play a game to find three hidden keys that ultimately unlocks a hidden Easter egg in the virtual reality program, giving the winner control of the Oasis. Yeah, I know it sounds like some teenager storyline made up with a bunch of kids playing video games in a basement. I know it made me thin of DD2's guy friends one in particular, who talks at great length about games and super hero comics. this as a complete surprise though, combining action and adventure, strategy, friendship, and good verses evil battle that crosses both worlds. The pop culture references were woven into the entire movie, appropriately and humorously, the Oasis creator having incorporated all his favorite music, movies, games, toys and doodads of the time he grew up in-the 70's-90's. The visuals and graphics were stunning, hence why the bigger screen would have been enjoyable. Its a hard movie to describe but my action loving husband, my teenager, and myself, we all enjoyed it.
If you're going to be stuck home on a Saturday night (not that we go out that much anyway), we had a good night in. Chinese and movies came to under $20. Have you rented or streamed any good movies lately? Please share your recommendations in the comments.

The boys watched the new Ant Man movie. I was finishing a book, so just caught the tail end. They enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteDH tried to watch on Netflix a month or so ago and the wifi was not working the best so he gave up. Good to know your boys like it.
DeleteThe Wife is fantastic as is black Klansman. I watched the Favourite and the jury is still out on whether I liked it or not, but I understand why Olivia Colman won the best actress award. The next movie I plan on renting will either be Mary Queen of Scots or Can You Ever Forgive Me.
ReplyDeleteWe may get some warm weather reprival, so I'll tuck these suggestions away for the next, I'm sure will happen yet in March, snowy day.
DeleteI agree with Anne. I watched The Wife on the plane to Sri Lanka and Glenn Close was brilliant. I understand why she was nominated. Jonathan Pryce was also brilliant. Then on the plane back I watched As Good As It Gets. I'm not a Jack Nicholson fan as I feel he only has "one act" but it was good, as was Colette with Keira Knightley. I don't think I would have chosen to go to any of these films at the cinema but as a captive audience on a plane they were pretty good.
