Simple Joy of the Week-YouTube Ex-Pat Vlogs

I love travelling, but don't get to do as much as I want. Still, I am happy to live vicariously through someone else. I don't mean looking at my mother-in-laws out of focus pictures and brochures she meticulously puts into scrap books after each trip, then wants to explain every picture to the person only casually wanting to page through. I'm happy for her and I know she loves her very scheduled and orderly trips, seeing the major sights in timed increments. What I really like is Vlogs on YouTube form people that have relocated to a new place, whether that be a new country, or even a different part of the United States.

The Vlogs I enjoy the most are a blend of them sharing their every day life living in a new to them place, with new to them norms blended with "tourism" days. These are often done when they have friends or family visiting. Sometimes they are done on a random day, blended in with other tourists and visitors. While often they show the best parts of their lives, the good ones share the stresses, the inconveniences, and challenges as well, though probably not in depth. Still, these are enough to make the video real and not just a travel brochure.

These YouTube video's make me think of my kids lives, the two older ones who have relocated and lived, not just visited, in multiple places in and out of the country. They both had to learn the new norms, the challenges, while exploring the newness and wonders. Perhaps someday this will be me as well, but until then, travel a bit with a few of these people. Note, these are all youngish people, but someday I hope to stumble upon someone closer to my age that has made this kind of a move while working or a recent retiree.

  1. So fun! For whatever reason, it's not my dream to live abroad, or at least at this phase of my life. I do dream about having an endless travel budget, as well as endless time to travel. I like travel to be relaxing, but I'm hopeful in a less stressed period of my life, it can be more about exploration

    1. I see us in our future staying somewhere for a few months at a time. Enough time to really explore and have some immersion into the culture and every day way of life, but not actually relocate.

    1. For the time being, that is our situation as well. But you can travel anywhere with movies, and books, and learning about other places and then when the time is right, you are ready.

  3. Bugger! My post just got shot into cyber space! Oh well. As you know I'm an expat, and have been for nearly 40 years! England will always be "home" of course but I think travelling outside your comfort zone somehow slows down time and you really get to live in the moment. I lived in England for 21 years, Switzerland for 6, the US for 5, Australia (only 6 months there but it was a blast) and 30 years in France. I'm not quite sure how all that happened as I certainly wasn't following anyone's career around the world. But for good or bad I sincerely believe that being out of your comfort zone helps you to live every moment. Or as Jim Croce sang so aptly "If I could save time in a bottle"! To anyone hesitating I would say "give it a go. You can always go back". But those times spent dealing with "different" are the ones you will always remember.

    1. Your life sounds so eciting to think about all the different parts of the world you have lived. And yet, when you write about your day to day life, it is surprisingly similar to mine. That is why I like this type of vlogs and blogs. I find unique new things to learn about, yet am reinforced that humans all just wan the same things-love and family, health, friendship, and a bit of adventure!

  4. I am not sure TheHub will ever retire, so all I see is occasional travel for us. Though we do have plans to get a small additional home in Portland so we can enjoy Pip as she grows older. We thought about getting a place in Manhattan until we realized we did not have an extra 3 million lying around. WTH?

    1. That would be an adventure-managing two homes plus your lake place!
