Thriving and Thrifty Thursday

I added the thriving part. I still can't control external forces that threaten to mess with our livelihood. I can't determine when an appliance is going to break and will need replacing. I definitely can't tell if and more likely when, a health crisis will disrupt my world. All I know is I can try and make the most of the money, time, and relationships I have now and every day. We may not be wealthy, but we are prosperous in things that matter. So with that, and because money alone does not create a life, I'm adding the mindset of thriving as I think about the thrifty things I did for the week.

  • Matched coupons from the Sunday paper with the Target add. I spent $132.48 after $19.50 in manufacturers dollars. I paid using $120 in Target cards bought at the December 10% off price, for a $12.00 savings, and the reminder was paid with past earned Target cards. Because I paid for the first  cards, I am counting this out of pocket as $108-but I have months of supplies stock piled.
  • I also earned an additional $30 in Target gift cards in that shop, and had $15 left from past earnings, plus the $2.48 balance. My free Target gift card balance is $47.52, plus I still have $100 worth of the cards bought in December.
  • I shared the coat success the other day, but worth repeating that I bought two gifts, some needed dish towels, and the coat for $101, plus earned $30 Kohl's cash.
  • By passed ordering a lunch for a working lunch meeting (not provided) and ate my simple yet tasty PB&J, yogurt, and clementine. Others said the sandwiches in the boxed lunches were dry and the little salads were overly dressed.
  • Instead of spending $2 on a Starbuck's last Friday when I walked to the Target for a stretch break with coworkers, I bought a 7 pack of instant coffee for $1.00.  I made myself a cup back at my desk. I've had a couple more cups since then.
Again, nothing is dramatic, though the Target card earning always gives me a buzz. I continued to find random change in places and popped into the canister. It will go towards a nice  reward in the future. How about you? Share your wins and link if you posted about them.

  1. good for you - especially bypassing the work lunch. It's tough to do when others are partaking. I didn't buy anything but groceries this week, mostly purging and continuing to sell things on the bidding site. I am spending $100 today to put our deposit down on our July fishing trip but that is free money as I use all the money we sell our crap from for fun money and that fund is at over $600 right now :)

    1. It's so resourceful how you pay for your fishing trip. Truly a well earned treat.

  2. Nice work! I took advantage of a two night hotel freebie, to take my mom on a long promised trip while on my sabbatical.

  3. You did really well on your spending and you are right, you have no control over a lot of external things. It is great to appreciate the things we do have,
I spent 129 bucks on new clothes. The season has changed here and very few of my summer clothes still fit. I ordered online and bunched free shipping with a 50 dollars off 150 code, in addition to sales price reductions. I bought 13 items, including 2 dresses in this order so I was pretty pumped!

    1. That's a new wardrobe for very little. You'll feel great wearing clothes that complement your healthy body.

  4. "...we are prosperous in the things that matter." LOVE THAT!!!
Not spending much at all here on myself or groceries, as I am still trying to eat down the stores. I bought a few gift cards for Christmas which earned me Rite Aid Bonus cash which I will turn into more gifts. I am actually almost finished with Christmas shopping! I have a birthday coming up, and I told the DH and kids to get me a hemp grocery bag, as my favorite store is phasing out plastic bags. I decided to make it easier on them, and bought it myself. That's about the only major expense not related to the house. I think I am at the point where I figure I have three of everything I need.

    1. We have no place for deals on gift cards. It's like free money! A nice shopping bag is a sound investment. Mine are getting pretty worn.

  5. Those little things always add up even though you can't see the results immediately. I continue to save my $5.00 bills and also my change and then my penny savings. It is nice to know that the money is there in case of a crisis. So far those have been averted.

    1. My canister, a penny coffee can, Daughter's assorted banks-we probably have hundreds tucked aside.

  6. "...we are prosperous in the things that matter." Very well said! After all resources are limited and we need to prioritize what matters.

    1. I wrote it so I'd do better to remember and live that truth.

  7. Oftentimes my lunch is a simple peanut butter and butter sandwich. The elementary school I attended made them for us regularly and me and my sister still eat them today, some 35 years later. It's the simple things in life that make it enjoyable.

    1. PB and J is a standby for me as well. Something comforting in them.
