It is officially summer in the northern hemisphere. I suppose that makes it officially winter to our friends on the opposite side of the globe. Admittedly, I am quite ignorant about weather and how seasons look and feel on our polar opposite. Do you get snow in Australia, New Zealand, and Argentina? I typically think of summer as June, July, and August and with September, we begin fall. That time between Memorial Day and Labor Day, give or take a few days on the calendar. That's the difference between astronomical seasons and meteorological summers. Whichever way we look at it, by June 20th summer truly kicks off. It's a weird summer to be sure though.
Today I'm spending time cleaning after a particularly long work week where the bare minimum was done. I'm also heading out, mask donned, to shop for things for a food and supply drive my daughters work is hosting. They have a couple local food shelves they are hoping to fill, along with a crisis center. I offered to volunteer, but she said it was more than covered, so I'll do my bit through shopping. Personal supplies and baby supplies are in real need. This is when I wish I worked Sluggy magic and had a nice reserve of items ready to donate, but I do have some spares of a few things already. I have a lot of canned fruit, picked up here and there from March to the end of April when we still weren't sure what the fresh fruit supply was going to look like. With kid home in the summer, despite schools and community service providers continuing to help with lunches, I know fruit will come in handy and we can certainly spare what we have.
If it's cooler today, I might do some baking. I have the ingredients for a banana cream pie (including a readymade pie crust), which is DH's favorite. With it being Father's Day. it would make a nice treat for brunch. We had homemade pizza last night and we got a little carried away with prepping ingredients, so I thought I'd do an egg bake and the potato, tomato, spinach and mushroom side that has become a favorite. If the weather holds out, the girls plan to paddle board later when they are both done working, but the college kid has to work 3-9 or later tomorrow. Maybe it will even be breakfast if DH decides he'd like to go to the lake. Do you have any plans for Father's Day? Neither girls knows what to get him, but I assured them now is probably an OK time to use the gift of time and just do an activity with him this week or the coming weeks. Spending money on stuff that is not needed will be better used later when they can actually do an outing. Hopefully we'll have a long call with our son, and he will have some promising news to share.
That's my official start to summer-not really planned, but as every weekend has been just sort of happening. I'm not really at a loss for tasks to accomplish, and if I feel like doing nothing, I have my old friend books to keep me company on the porch. I think I'll make time for a book regardless. Happy Summer , or Winter if that is the case, Solstice.

Happy Summer Solstice you you, too! Also from the Northern Hemisphere.
ReplyDeleteA wonderful project, collecting food for the needy. Your daughter's work place should be quietly congratulated.
If all of Summer stayed like it is right now, morning of the Solstice, it would be lovely. But it won't. Heat/humidity will come, and those, I don't do well with, anymore.
Sooo....._Do_ things in the morning. Take it easy, the rest of the day.
Enjoy your Solstice!
It was a good first day of summer, though cloudy. Her drive was successful, I got some cleaning done, and did some reading and later played cards with a small group of family members.
DeleteBanana cream pie is one of my favorites. I spent almost all of my childhood in South America, 5 years of it in Argentina. Got cold in winter. Lots of snow in the mountains and Foothills, little if any on the coast or in the capital where we lived. We returned to the US mid way thru my senior year in high school. I'd been used to reversed seasons. Cultural shock was much harder! Hope you have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteSome day, perhaps I'd like to live reverse hemisphere and avoid the Minnesota winters entirely-at least January-mid March. I'm researching all the affordable places to stay for a few months at a time.
DeleteBanana creme pie sounds devine. We don't have bid plans for Father's Day. Church and my son in law is fixing dinner.
ReplyDeleteAs a surprise for my husband, our oldest son is bringing breakfast and donuts in the morning. He did the same for Mother's Day too and I WAS surprised!
Have a good weekend!
Those sound like excellent plans for having no plans. I do miss both the Fathers Day BBQ's in my family and at the lake. We used to split the day-go Saturday night to mid afternoon at the e lake, then join my family for a gathering later Sunday when my both dads were alive. Now, we just celebrate for my husband.
DeleteHappy Summer SAM! Banana crème pie sounds so good, but I am the only one here who would eat it. We are celebrating Father's Day with my dad tonight with a cookout. I decided to get him some old school board games-- Sorry, Jenga and Uno-- which he can play with my niece and nephew and with my kids when we go over there. I am got him a 6 pack of Budweiser! LOL I think I am going to make steaks for Bill tomorrow for Father's Day. The kids are making him a book and I got him a couple needed pairs of exercise shorts as he has said he wants to get back into running. Hope you have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteI love that you'll have a cook out for your dad-brings good memories for me when my dad was alive. The games and beer are a very nice idea as well. Tell Bill Happy FD from me.
DeleteI remember the first time I participated in Anne's Christmas card exchange and I got a Christmas card from Kylie in Australia with Santa surfing! I thought it was really cool!
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome. I have not been good the last few years with the card exchange. I love this about blogging though-friends we haven't yet met all over the world.
DeletePerhaps you asked as a joke if there is snow in Argentina--I have a hard time reading tone in text. I hope it was a joke, but if not, yes, there is snow in Aregentina, in the southern parts. There is a mountain range in that area called the Andes--very snowy. South America is a huge continent, as is North America, with a vast microclimate. Your northern countries, like Guyana, Venezuela, Colombia, have your tropical climates. The further south, (further from the equator, you see) gets colder, but the areas by the coast are temperate.
ReplyDeleteWell, yes, I was somewhat playing around with self effacing humor, and being fairly educated, I know the Andes and that different parts of South America will have different climates. I was probing to hear from those that live there how they are experiencing what is our summer solstice. Thank you just the same though, for commenting.
DeleteI did figure you knew, but the former world traveler/educator in me can't keep my fingers still. Still, you'd be surprised how many educated people can't point to Argentina on a map.
DeleteSo kind of you to help with supplies for your daughter's work service mission. We all need to help as we are able. My focus has been donating to food packs for kids who relied on school meals for the brunt of their eating.
ReplyDeleteHappy Summer Solstice, Happy Birthday to my Beloved Sister, Happy Winter Solstice and Happy anything else I missed. I am glad it is summer and the garden is beginning to produce. I will be even happier when the cleaning/sorting/selling is through at Mom's. I want to lallygag in the pool but that does not seem to be in the cards this year.
Her work had a successful event. I chatted a bit after dropping off to the lovely daughters of one of her coworkers, 2 of nine adopted children, though I am not sure how many are biologically siblings, but hey were just sweethearts directing drop of traffic flow. I love seeing young people throw themselves into volunteer work. Meal packs are so needed as well. I tried to shop like a family that needed to pull together healthy, but kid friendly lunches to go along with the non-food items. Happy Birthday to your sis and Happy FD to your husband. Good luck getting through the sorting. 2020 can move forward please!
DeleteHere is a link, to the Original Soundtrack of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" film from 1999.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, humidity really wipes me out!!!!
Thank you for your comment.
Lovely to listen to when I putter in my kitchen-thank you.
DeleteThe longest day of the year, such a grand day in Sweden. I finally felt like it was summer yesterday, and I guess that is because it is! Your comment about making a pie, just tipped me off. I have frozen homemade crusts and frozen apple and I am going to make Hubs an apple pie! His favorite. I was at a loss as to what to do for him. Have a wonderful solstice.
ReplyDeleteMy husband would have been just as happy with an apple pie, but then I'd have had to peel and prep the apples. This meant the oven was only on for the crust.
DeleteNever mind summer - bring on Halloween!!
ReplyDeleteI love fall, but I don't want to rush summer as you know what comes after fall in Minnesota-yuck!
