Old picture due to laziness. |
Two nights out for dinner/ appetizers plus a round at the brewery and I've made sure to keep upping that August meals out and entertainment budget. That gives motivation to use it up on meals heading into the Labor Day weekend, starting fresh in September. I'll back track to Friday as I plan.
Friday-I texted DH some options and the result was a sort of mushroom stroganoff penne pasta. I some plain yogurt to make apple cinnamon quick bread from a packet.
Saturday-Frozen Lottsa Mozza Supreme pizza movie night.
Sunday- Cinnamon rolls and fruit before heading to the lake. I made rice crispy bars, Italian pasta salad, and ham and cheese roll ups to take with. We'll stop for sweet corn on route too. Not sure who else or what else will be there, but this will be plenty for us and to share. We'll just make due with fend for yourself tonight.
Monday- Chicken Kiev, rice, mixed vegetables.
Tuesday- Birthday dinner at family members.
Wednesday- Red bag chicken, mashed potatoes, corn.
Thursday- Macaroni and cheese, muffins, green beans.
Friday-Pasta bake with mozzarella, garlic drop biscuits or bread if I'm ambitious.
There's a few other options too like tuna hotdish, or curry for me, cheddar-apple-sausage meatballs, or a simple vegan chili or pasta fagiole soup. Everything should yield leftovers for lunch. It's always amazing to me how many meals can be made when supposedly we need groceries. This uses what we have in house and keeps me out of the grocery store. I shouldn't even need bread and eggs if my plan is a success. I may need to ration my favorite coffee, but I drink too much of that anyway. I've loads of tea bags for hot or iced, plus lemon juice. Other than trivia and birthday party, I'm staying put and not spending. Next weekend, I think I'll go easy in lake food too and get stuff to make in crockpot and some salads and snacks. The guys will likely bring dock in, and times will be muddy for meals. I'm working through some meal challenges for September and an overall budget challenge. More to come.
I’m not cooking today. Plenty of leftovers in the fridge, plus whoever goes to the birthday party will eat there. We’ll be watching the weather with the hurricane coming up through the gulf again. Last time we fared well with the three inches of rain we got but I won’t do much grocery shopping until the threat is gone, so more cobbled together meals in the meantime. The temps are in the 70’s for the next two weeks so I can finally start making soups and using my oven again. Daughter also starts work on Monday so add that to our already hectic lives. On top of mind that needs used up-a large zucchini, fresh green beans, a package of thick ham slices, a few pieces of frozen Texas toast, and half a bag of frozen shrimp. I could make popcorn chicken bowls, spaghetti, shrimp pasta something, breakfast, fish and pierogies, something with chicken. Plenty of choices on paper, time and motivation to be determined. JoAnn
ReplyDeleteWe ended up picling up some brats and buns, so now I have anothe rmeal of leftovers. Hawaii Plan had a delcious Zuchinni fritter recipe. I still need to try it but if like th eones we had n France or even the oldRuby Tuesdays. they likley will be a ice use of that vegetable. I hope you get throughthe storm well.
DeleteI've been working on our menu as well. I think today I'll make up a giant batch of taco meat (3-4 meals worth), a couple for this week & a couple for the freezer.
ReplyDeleteNick is making dinner rolls for tonight, and we're having tomato soup to go with that.
I need a plan for the rest of the week
I need Nick in my kitchen. Homemade rolss and tomato soup sounds terrific.
DeleteI decided unless there are some tremendous stock up sales, September will be my "no buy" month. The exceptions will be bread and fresh produce.
ReplyDeleteI am going to need to plan and actually stick to the plan with more intention that is my norm.
I need September, for my own thrifty self, to be a low spend month. If things inmprove, I want to be able to give my son his whoe plane ticket and get him home without him having the burden when he worked so hard to get back to working and caught up on his expenses.
DeleteI failed spectacularly on my no spend August, so September is a designated no spend, with the meals reflecting that. I figured I would start today. So, tonight I have planned baked Tilapia with salad and roasted potatoes. This evening, DH is picking up a Rug Doctor so I can clean the family room rug and the one remaining soft upholstered chair (the rest are leather.) While there, he will pick up some sirloin steaks for $4.99/lb--not the lowest price ever, but I think it's about as good as it gets. Tomorrow, I will clean the rug and chair, and about all I will feel up to after that is watching him grill steaks as I assemble a salad. (You have 24 hours with the machine, so we get it the evening before we intend to use it. When I am done, I call around to see if any neighbors care to use it before it is returned.) The rest of the week will see risotto, fish and chips, pasta with ground beef, grilled hot dogs, meat loaf, roast chicken and a tuna casserole. I am committed to the no spend month, but I will allow myself to take advantage of rock bottom grocery sales if any arise. I WAS trying to eat down the freezer and pantry, but I am a bit concerned of the supply chain experiencing disruptions. To that end, I figure I can move the contents of a freezer and pantry with minimal trouble. Already, we are experiencing delays with the build, including delivery of the trusses, and availability of an acrylic shower--builder found one several towns away, but it was 4" smaller than I had hoped for. As my alternative was getting a tiled in one (and I REFUSE to scrub grout) and the shower is still 6 inches bigger than a standard, I told him to grab it. (My builder dislikes putting in fiberglass due to quality.) All this to say that these times will see me meal planning, and enjoying a no spend challenge for September, while also scouring the stores for rock bottom prices. The meal planning is the biggest indicator, in my life, of how successful a no spend month will be!
ReplyDeleteI plan to spend minimally, but as you say, hard to pass rock bottom sales. I'm OK wiht a lot of hotdishes and soups, and avoidig a month of eatin gout and take out. A sI have no kids to think aobut nd DH will eat what is there prepared I should have no issues.
DeleteI always like hearing about your menus/cooking
ReplyDeleteNot once did I read something I would not like.
Pretty much comofrt and basic meals. We did get phenomenal corn, so I have some left over to eat, plus a few to get the kernals off and a future chowder.
DeleteThe picture of tomato and pasta has me hungry even after a big meal! I think I am going to finally make the dish Tommy reeled off ingredients I had to make it--chicken, rice, and cream of mushroom. Plus, I am just about ready for chicken and dumplings. I have everything for that, too.
ReplyDeleteChicken and duplings sounds good to me as well.
DeleteYour menu sounds good, Sam. It is amazing what you can make when you think you have no food in the house. And I’ve read that from several different bloggers this week. We had baked potatoes with all the toppings, which is one of my favorite meals. Just a simple potato with cheese. Yum.
ReplyDeleteYou reminded me I have 2 or maybe 3 sweet potatoes to use as well, so I think those will be added somewhere in the week. I ove a good fluffy baked potato. I love them with butter and sour cream, but cheese woud make it a meal.
