Thrifty Thursday-Not Every Week

There's just going to be weeks where things come up that throw curves in spending. I feel like if overall we make good decisions for ourselves in time, resources, and money, I'm still practicing thrift and economy. While of course the dog is our daughters, I can't help adding treats or things I think will help them both acclimate to each other. Both DH and I are ready to help her too. He was a surprise, but often the best things that come into life are. This is what passed for thrift this week.

  • Found a discount at Fleet Farm for travel type hard kennel for my daughter. I used an additional coupon of $10 off $75 and added my pups food to the pickup order.
  • Compared equivalent gates, baby section to dog. Same gate was $5 less in baby section.
  • Brought items from home that needed eating combined with my daughters food and we had two meals Saturday for very little. ( Saved $$ to later get a wine flight at a cute wine bar)
  • Picked more produce from my daughter's garden. I made a large pot of tomato sauce, sending some back with her. We washed and froze cherry tomatoes for another batch. The sauce made excellent goulash.
  • Used up old bananas for muffins. Sent some home with my daughter to help her have quick in the go breakfast
  • Used all the online resources for dog training support. They are coming along.
  • Used more discounts on yet more pet supplies. Two crates/ kennels are needed for travel and different places in her house.
  • WhatsApp provided free long distance calls and texts with our daughter in Spain
  • Placed 3rd in Trivia so a $10 beer money for next time
  • DH got my car oil changed. All's well on my car. It was odd driving college kid's car on the weekend.
  • The few days of heat and humidity meant I can ed and out the AC on. It was so humid, you could slice the moisture in the house. I turned off again once the heavy feeling in house was gone.
  • Used coupons to fill up gas. It went up again after being low on the weekend, so not good timing on my fill up.
I'll use more gas for a while helping to dog sit while she's both training and on her days she can't telework. It worked out fine and I think once he's fully trained, she can probably get a dog helper to let him out on a longer day. We'll have him come to us with his kennel if she's gone a weekend or even too long outside his normal down times into the evening, once he's more acclimated. What are grandparents for?

  1. I think you're right in that if you're mostly frugal the occasional blow out doesn't really matter - especially not for a cute pup, right?

    1. He's going to take time, but I think he'll be a good addition to the family. Money and time are meant for family.

    1. That's what thrift is for. Figuring out priorities. Jewelery and new clothes aren't mine but love of family is. I don't have to say that to you, though. You're the choir director.

  3. Did a grocery pickup instead of being tempted by things in the store and actually meal planned. Bought my nephew’s birthday gift this week, combining a great sale and my employee discount. Got him four outfits, pajamas, socks and a pair of sunglasses for $30. Saved my receipts for the apps, did a $3 Pinecone survey. Fall weather arrived right on cue, 85 yesterday, 65 today. Obviously no more AC but there’s no way we’ll put the furnace on for at least a few weeks…although I might have had the heat on in the car tonight lol. Not frugal this week? Me spending $20 on some peanut butter fudge for my niece’s school fundraiser. I’m thankful that I’m in a spot where I can do that for her. Which kind of goes along with your question of what are grandparents for. That’s what aunties are for ;) My sister in law and I had a conversation the other day about what kind of grandmas and mother-in-laws we hope to be someday. I have had first hand experience of what not to do! JoAnn

    1. I may or may not ever be a grandparent, but I can love up dogs and other people's kiddos. You had some good buys.

    1. She's still got to gain confidence in these things too. We stayed in the same spot both half's of trivia.
