Walking for Weight Loss

I've shared a lot and have asked input on my meal changes to help me lose weight and live a healthier life. I've written less about exercise, particularly because I have been lacking in this area. We decided not to join the Y, even for the summer. The $300 fee just seemed like it could be better used towards DD2's higher cost activities in the school year. Plus, she is living at the beach and down at the river hiking with friends. I doubt she would have used the Y like she claimed. I mistakenly thought my health plan gave a credit for health club membership, but it doesn't, so the full cost would have been out of pocket.

For me, walking is free, and the exercise clips from the Fab, Fit, Fun subscription are in easy doses. I just need to actually do more of both. I started today with a short 1.1 mile walk with pup. I have to admit, I was pretty tired when done, showing that I have slacked off my walking lately. I was curious how many calories I burned, just a paltry 106. It's better than adding those calories though, right. The site I was on linked to Verywell.com and an article on walking to lose weight. The goal is to get up to the 60 minute walks, at a brisk pace, for optimal calorie burn and cardiovascular  conditioning. Pup and I, including his many pee breaks, probably only walked 20 minutes or so. I'll keep working on this, and perhaps start charting my progress by week on how far I walk, for a goal to reach 10 miles per week by end of summer, and maybe even 15 by end of year. If I do this, I'll add my miles walked to my Feeling Good Friday posts.

I wasn't the only tired one after our walk.

  1. My husband and I walk every morning, but in the summer when it's hot we don't walk as far nor as fast. The humidity just does me in.

  2. I don't know anyone who can walk briskly for 60 minutes (even my type A personality hubby). Even when I do the treadmill I stop at the 15 minute mark, make a bed, change laundry over etc so I can get my steam back to finish up a full half an hour. Do what works for you. Even a 1.1 mile walk every day is good for you and the dog! Buddy has never gotten so many walks, he's tired too but loving it. Maybe keep a walking log? So that you know what kind of exercise you put in?

    1. All at one time seems like an hour would be a lot, but two summers ago, my friend V and I were regularly I agree though that even a little will help, and no senses injuring myself taking on too much. walking for over an hour. I just need to get my body to cooperate again.

  3. 1.1 is great. Remember something is better than nothing. I love walking, although I haven't been able to do it very much lately and both my waist and my attitude have been affected. Just too much going on and no time. I am hoping to get back to it next month when the kids go back to school. We shall see. Keep up the good work!

    1. I don't have young kids at home, so it is down to pure laziness, so need to get myself back in the mode. I will have a happy dog each morning if I make sure we get a good one in before I go to work.

  4. I gave up gym memberships after going off and on for years. I much prefer walking outdoors and saving the money! Being inside the gym and gym culture (sharing sweaty machines that aren't properly wiped down, having to wait to use those machines, etc...) just aren't my thing. I thought knowing I was paying for it each month would get me to go more often, but it didn't work. A walk through our neighborhood is so much more therapeutic and enjoyable.

    1. The Y has gotten higher and higher in cost, but with DD1 well out of the ages for the youth programs, we just weren't seeing the value. I know me, and it would have been been a waste of money.

walking is the most efficacious of exercises for mind/weight/and soul.

    1. Coming from a health care professional, I'll take it that I am on to a good thing. I do agree with the mind and soul. Even with my difficult walking partner, aka the pup, who couldn't help but start the day right seeing and smelling the fresh outdoors.

  6. My most successful (thought not long term) losses came about from walking. When I walk I remind myself of what else that walk is giving me: fresh air, a view of the community, getting up off the couch, empowering myself.

    1. I like to think I am empowering myself. Thanks for that expression, Jolie.

  7. I'm an avid walker and also photographer so I combine the two activities. I'm walking for more than an hour BUT stopping along the way to take photos so it balances out.

    1. I think if I didn't have the dog with, I'd find a better pace and be able to walk farther. He wears on my patience.

  8. I've found out that the 7-hour sleep is even more useful than walking in weightloss. Not only because we don't eat while we sleep, but also because it seems metabolism works very well during sleep.
