My Wednesday Pantry Throwback: Universal Salad Dressing-In Time for Labor Day Par...

With Easter this weekend, many of us both are looking for side dishes or recipes to use up the ham or other food abundance. As it's staycation week, I'm recycling a post from a couple summers ago. I know I'm going to make a ham, pasta, broccoli,  and cheese salad at some point next week and remembered I did a universal salad dressing post. I know some of you hate mayo and others will use, in my opinion, the dreaded Miracle Whip, but the universality of it is that the base can be swapped out and possible salad ingredient combinations are endless. Enjoy!

Sam, Coffee, Money, & Thyme: Universal Salad Dressing-In Time for Labor Day Par...: I through together a hybrid salad to bring to the lake. I over shopped and needed to clear some room and had two smallish chicken breasts....

  1. I make a similar dressing only I add lemon juice if I have fresh. I love mayo. Yesterday I had a delicious green salad with Kalamata olives, tomatoes, and purple onions. I don't find winter tomatoes that good but these came from my farm share so better than most. Has your daughter cooked anything yet? GS will just be home Easter- his school is just 2 hours away.

    1. Lemon would be nice addition. Does avacado on toast count for cooking?

    2. LOL I've never made the avocado toast so yes! I am baking a carrot cake for Easter and just found a Greek recipe for a Greek custard pie I want to try- I'm still following the Mediterranean way of eating.

    3. We may make a refrigerator cheesecake type pie for Easter, and I'll have her do that. Who knows, she might be making all of Easter Dinner if we both feel lousy.

  3. Thanks for sharing Sam. We are doing our family Italian feast on Saturday so Sunday will be very nontraditional Italian leftovers lol. Works for me! :)

  4. I am joining in your dislike of Miracle Whip, but to each his/her own. I like having a base dressing to make whatever I have on hand.

    1. That's the nice thing, folks can switch or add to taste. I like the lemon juice suggestion.

  5. We are hoping it's going to stay dry for Easter, because we can now meet family, but only outside in the garden. Arilx

  6. Thanks for the tip about the universal salad dressing. I use something similar on my broccoli salad, but I didn't think of using the dressing for other salads too. Definitely going to put it on pasta salads and others now. Thanks!

    1. It's really nice on pasta, particularly with fruit or veg.

  7. As you know, I LOVE Miracle Whip. But, I learned the hard way it cannot be subbed in a recipe that calls for mayo. It was a nasty pasta salad dressing. Mayo has to be disguised for me...lol. By the way, MW and PB are delicious without the bread or banana.

    1. As I never use Miracle Whip, not sure exactly why the substitution created a bad dressing, but perhaps because it is already made with some of th eingredients in the recipe-so too much? I'll leave you to your sandwich and MW. More for you to enjoy.
