Thrifty Thursday-Following Up on Monday

Monday I write about trying to save more cash to help get us through the economic downturn that's causing our retirement funds to go south. I really need to think before all purchases, but not to the point that needs aren't being taken care of. I also am thinking, don't I always, needs verse wants, verse quality of life purchases. No treats, no smiles, makes working so many hours feel so confining. Within this three legged stool is where I am trying to land.

Good quality food, not cheap processed stuff, but made from scratch in  efficient manners to conserve money. Looking over my work clothes, and then looking at what's available in stores to purchase, has me putting new work clothes at the bottom of my priorities. However, a hooded, quilted medium weight jacket, to use this fall and again next spring, or on mild winter days, was determined worthy of buying. I will spend a lot of time outdoors walking dogs. The options I have require odd layers, or not very walkable wools, or are just too warm. It was worth the splurge.

Using this lens, here's my list of what I say passed for thrift the last week.

  • Used a 30% off coupon for my puffer jacket, new underwear and socks for DH, and socks for me at Kohl's. I bought men's smallish size ankle socks for me as  they both wear better than women's, and were cheaper per pair. We used but one get second 1/2 off.
  • Earned $20 in Kohl's cash that I'll use towards Docker style pants for DH. They didn't have any his size in store, but I can order for free ship to store.
  • Bought a large whole chicken for under $8. I roasted yesterday to eat with potatoes, but also made broth for soup, plus deboned enough for at least two more meals with leftovers. Lori's white bean chicken chili is calling to me as is Tpols chicken pot pie! The pot pie ingredients are ready to go.
  • Uploaded receipts to Fetch.
  • Bought a second hand dog food puzzler, but it won't come until Sunday. It still qualified for free shipping, but saved 25%
  • Butcher shop bones, uncooked, thawed, are a lifeline to prevent chewing on things the dog shouldn't. He has a limited time with them per professional guidance, but I m not ashamed to say I look forward to bone time!
  • I renewed my Sam's Club membership. We determined the overall savings was worth it. There's a few expensive items, DH's vitamins, my allergy meds, dish washer tablets, and other things like that I've priced out from stores save between $7 and $18 for the year per item. My daughter's card, who got my second, was renewed too. She does really well on produce, sometimes half as much on frozen fruit and vegetables.
I'm filling up before I hit the road with gas in town where it's cheaper by far, plus using a coupon. I do have a coupon if I need to top off on route. I've got my own water bottle, sandwich, and snacks for the 2 1/2 hour drive each way. I've done well not eating fast food, so this is both healthier and thrifty. What wins did you have this week? Are you making concrete decisions to not buy things?

  1. I agree with you about how hard it is to find the right balance on spending, there is no point saving for tomorrow if you don't enjoy today.

    1. We've had and will have some big expenses, but they're known. It's the unknown that I want to prepare for better. But, also still enjoy the unexpected moments.

  2. After insurance I spent a little over $250 for new glasses. I added the no glare, blue blocker, no line bifocals. The good thing is they are under warrantee for two years so any scratch at all and I can get them replaced. $20.00 of that was for the 80% view scan which thankfully came out perfect.
Amazon had the Kitchen Aid stand mixer marked down by $120.00, plus I had 20.00 in Amazon credit so I ordered that. Not a need but a want that I will use a LOT.
I believe balance is the key in life. And yes on the better quality food. I'm a firm believer that it improves your health saving money on your health.

    1. With all the delicious baking, the KitchenAid will be fun to use this fall and winter.

  3. We canceled Amazon prime, which will save a bit. We're also trying to be more thoughtful about purchases. I'll say that I'm better at this than my husband. He's more of a work in progress.

    1. Prime really is too convenient but with shipping things different places, it really helps us out. I still haven't cancelled streaming services I said I would.

  4. I bought my roaster and have the pot pie ingredients on hand too. I stocked up my pantry lately because of the extreme inflation in my country, the prices are going up as fast as the blink of an eye. I have also started working on next year's budget because, there are some foreseeable expenses such as new tires for my car.

    1. I know inflation is hitting other countries even harder than the US. You were smart to plan ahead.

  6. I have informed the kids that this will be, once again, a modest Christmas, and they are unphased, so I guess that passes for thrift. While we are good in our situation, I feel like we are recovering from the build. Also, previous tenant left me with some repairs on our rental, so I won't break even until March. Interestingly, since you mentioned Sam's Club--our Costco Membership expired some time ago. Typically, when you go to check out with an expired membership, they add the renewal to your order total. Well, our membership has been expired for a good number of months, and we hadn't noticed since we haven't been there. I always said Costco is 3 hours and $300 minimum per visit, plus a $1.50 Polish and soda/person. (Though they don't sell the Polish dogs in the food court anymore.) I guess we are saving money by not frequenting Costco, but I'm not sure. (Now you've given me a pen and paper research project for the day...THANKS LOADS!) Hey...tomorrow's FRIDAY!!!! Enjoy your day.

    1. My kids being full on adults get that we'll be practical and we're encouraging them to be more subdued with their giving, more feeling, less money. Fortunately I'm not overly wooed by Sam's if not something I need or a good price.

  7. Groceries seem to be getting more and more expensive here! We've been experiencing drought conditions and it's definitely affected the produce available (I did not buy a single raspberry this season - $8 for a small pack?? No way!). A small frozen fryer chicken - spotted one for $25 and ended up buying a pre-roasted/seasoned one from the deli for $17. Enough for a meal on its own, then a ginormous pot of chicken soup - a far better deal.

I've been trying not to go shopping, but I got a bunch of gift cards, so am rewarding myself with a bit of a splurge this weekend.

    Thanks for the inspiration, Sam!

    1. I can't fathom those prices, Sheila. I don't know if income reflects the higher costs, but that is expensive chicken. You have a lovely wardrobe and am sure you could have fun clothes swaps instead of shop's.

  8. I made Lori's white bean chicken chili too (first time for me). It's definitely a keeper!

  9. Yes, I do make concrete decisions not to buy things all the time. I am still working on getting Tommy to eat a sandwich I pack when we go away and need to eat. He easily gave up eating Hardee's when I bought expensive ready to eat or ready to cook sausage patties. Now, I just have to find what he will give up a burger to eat when out.

The patties are not expensive when compared to two sausage and biscuits or even one for him. I can even eat a salad I pack with chicken on top. And, I can keep it cool, too.

Now, I have to figure out the food he will accept on the road, so to speak.

Amazon Prime has been a money saver and an energy saver when I do not feel like going store to store to find what I do need. Plus, I can compare one brand, price, and features versus another brand, price, and features.

    1. I think you mentioned the little cracker packets. That's something at least. I worry about his health. He's not yet 70, and you describe him as in so poorly. But, your dinners at home are always healthy so I guess it might balance the occasional low cost burger.

  11. Last weekend’s hayride and corn maze was expensive, no trying to sugar coat that one lol. But it was worth it. I’d much rather do something than buy something. We stopped at Applebees afterwards for half price appetizers just because we weren’t ready to go home yet. Again, not very frugal, but it was nice to linger over some spinach dip and just chat. I spent about $125 on groceries but loaded my freezer with ground meat and picked up some thanksgiving items. We won’t be buying Halloween candy or costumes and I’m certainly not buying any decor when I haven’t put up what I already have on hand. We will most likely not be renewing our Sam’s club membership in March although I will miss those rotisserie chickens ;) JoAnn

    1. With two dogs here Halloween night, I'm going to be the mean neighbor and not turn on lights. We've never not passed out treats, but it has to be this year, pup always has been stressed out and I don't have the energy on a Monday night handling both dogs alone. If it was t for some of the health related products and sharing membership with my daughter, I wouldn't renew either, but we did the math.

  12. You have some great frugal wins! I'm currently working on our food budget and meal planning. We have so much at home that needs to be eaten.
