Money Monday- Deal or No Deal

I'm really trying to not be lured into sales and deals this year and for the rest of my life. As we purge, I keep finding things bought at super low, bargain, and on clearance prices, that years later, sit unused. I'm trying to see what is gift worthy, needs to be used up, what is donateable, and what's just outdated clutter.

Here's a short list of items uncovered, nothing bought in the last two years:

  • 2 piece casserole baking dishes
  • Bubble blowers and lots of bubble refills
  • Infant/toddler telephones
  • Alligator pool ( had two but have I e to great nephew for 2nd birthday)
  • Tons of thick boot socks
  • Candles
  • Yard lights
  • Fab,fit,fun stuff
  • Assorted earrings and hair accessories
  • Years worth of boxes, bies, and wrapping paper
There's more gently, barely used items too. Point being, it's not a bargain if it sits in closets for years. Who can relate?

  1. The good news is, it hasn't "spoiled" - no one will know if you give them socks or candles you bought years ago!

  2. Gosh can I ever relate. I'm being pretty good at the moment spending an hour a day sorting stuff to donate. Today I got rid of one bag of clothes and a huge bag of jewellery, most of which I'm pretty sure I never wore. I NEVER wear necklaces so why on earth I bought half that stuff beats me! Keep up the good work!

    1. I have bracelets that I don't wear. I hate things in my wrist.

  3. I come pretty close to the mark, but estimate I always have about 10% of waste for gifts & the like. I do the same with gift card deals. Not a deal if I never use them! I have sold a bunch on Raise (the airline dropped the route we were planning to take, during COVID), but still lost a bit. Not worth holding onto the gift cards for some future vacation that may or may not ever happen.

I'm trying to be much more cautious this year as well. Oh, & I used to be big into Rite Aid deals, but last year stopped going entirely, and we still have quite a few supplies. I stop by very occasionally and buy only what's on my list, regardless of the deal. It works a lot better for the budget.

    1. I've been guilty of the gift card waste for sure. I misplaced them too.

  4. I can relate indeed. But as the above commenter said, nobody will know, should you choose to give them as gifts, that they have been around for a while!

    1. If they are gift worthy, I will certainly use still.

  5. Oh I can so relate to this. It’s hard to face all that money wasted on things I thought were needed, that sat unused for years. Online shopping is what I need to stay away from, buying stuff I don’t really need to qualify for free shipping!!!!
I don’t smoke or drink, but heck I’ve wasted some money on free shipping.

    1. Online shopping is too convenient. It's not getting the wrong items returned that do me in.

  6. Stuff__I have it. I need to get rid of so much more and I need absolutely nothing. Yet, I did find myself salivating over a Christmas themed comforter for my bed. I did not buy it, but that does not keep me from drooling when I see the pictures

    1. The way holiday stuff is displayed it sure is alluring. Thing is, I probably have enough that I could recreate the look!

  7. Take a box of new things, give as a gift or extra gift to someone at Christmas. They might appreciate it. A new candle does not have a dae on it, so give new things as a gift. Don't beat yourself up. Maybe just consider it a lesson learned.

    1. I'm not beating myself up, just a thought in how a deal sitting in shelves isn't really saving money.

  8. By we learned this with stocking stuffers. When we moved, daughter moved and Lil sis moved, we found loads of stocking stuffer stuff stuffed in drawers and then thrown away. we took a really hard look at this tradition and said no more. Unless it is edible or a gift card.

    1. Lotions, Chapsticks etc. I can relate! It's way to throw those items in your cart and forget they're there.

  10. If I'm ever asked to help friends declutter it's always the sales bargains that end up being donated to charity. xxx
