Why Do Get I Always Get the Travel Bug?

Sluggy got new luggage last week. not many things in life excite me than new luggage and the thought of filling it to head to new places. I realized reading her post that we have not been anywhere now for over a month! We spent January through March on the go for show choir and I feel like I am having withdrawal symptoms. I can procrastinate and waste time with the best of them, but now I really have no time nor funds for any travel. For heavens sake though, with all the weekenders, I should be satisfied for a while.

I think what I miss is the planning to go. I'm so busy making to do lists for the house, the party, for work, and that is all fine and good, but I don't have any destinations on the horizon to research and plan for. I don't need the calendar commitment, but I was a bit disappointed, I won't lie, that I'm not having to cover a business trip to Memphis for my boss. She worked out a few things on her end. I've not been to Memphis, and the meeting, while full days, always leaves a little time for exploring. I am going to New Orleans again in June, the week after DD2's party, but there is very limited time to explore. However, as we have a limited air budget, I'm actually taking one of the lesser costs flights, which while it leaves at stupid o'clock early, I land at 10:30. My dinner meeting isn't until 6:00 so I should have an afternoon to explore the French quarter.

I'm excited for DD1 who is heading to Iceland, meeting a UK friend. She hasn't done too much planning yet, though the other night shared a picture of an island, or a beach that is a famous home for puffins. We both love puffins! For her, they are right up there with sloths. DS will have his trip-to see us. I'm not sure if he has anything else planned, but as he says, he lives in an area that is a vacation destination and has hardly done any exploring in his adopted home state.

We'll have our fair share of weekends at the cabin. DH has more vacation starting last year though he used two weeks for our trip. With no trip planned, he can hopefully take several Friday-Saturdays and give himself several four day weekends. Vacation time isn't an issue for me as I have over four weeks banked, plus I earn another day a pay period. I'm hoping we can get a few days at the lake on weekdays when others are working and have a little time to ourselves. Though, as I wrote the other day, I hope to make a better effort appreciating family rather than allowing annoyances to be bigger than they really are.

If you have any vacation plans, where are you heading? Are you like me, and enjoy the planning almost as much as the going? When travel isn't on your calendar, how do you make the most of vacation time?

  1. We may be going away very soon, but will probably book it the day before we go. That's what we did last year and we got a really good deal, so we're watching with fingers crossed that nobody books the cottage. If they do, then we weren't meant to go, and will find somewhere else.

    1. After DD2 is off to school, O think that will be our way to get a little get away, if we can. It will depend on our older daughters schedule if she can dog sit. I look forward to hearing if you get your cottage get away.

  2. I love having things planned, but have a few places I really like to go to relax. I'm less of an "explore new places" person at this phase. I think because of work & travel commitments on that side. Right now, I know I have the following planned. So much more than usual due to my sabbatical!

-A trip to Las Vegas with my mom
-A trip to the Oregon coast. Some of the time just with M,some with the kids, some with my family
-A trip to Hawaii with my sister
-A girls trip to the Oregon coast
    -A relay in Portland
-Boulder in September for a work trip

    1. Those all sound truly lovely. I hope your sabbatical is put to good use, having the time to relax and make future plans without the weight of your hectic work schedule.

  3. Since we just got back form NYC last night, we are done with travel of any substance until July. We plan to go to Oregon to see our granddaughter then, and most likely will remain in town with the exceptions of lake weekends through the middle of October. We are planning a trip to Florida then. There is always the possibility of a weekend trip somewhere close, but if so it will just be a spur fo the moment trip.

    1. We will need to maximize lake weekends as well, and with DH having some time, he can actually get a couple four day weekends. I love how you say you will go to Oregon to visit your grand daughter (as I assume the parents a re a packaged deal with her.)

  4. Isn't it funny how we can become dissatisfied with our lot and dream of another. Why do we do that? I do that all the time. But travel is fun if you are with the right people.

    1. I;m not so much dissatisfied than just feel lie there is so much to see before I am unable to go. You make a good point though-I need to reflect on why I feel a need to be o the go when I have more than enough to keep me busy and happy here.
